Britain challenges U.N on Iraq

UNITED NATIONS -- Britain challenged the United Nations on Saturday to stand up to Iraq's defiance of Security Council resolutions, echoing the demand issued by President Bush under threat of unilateral U.S. military attack. "We have not just an interest, but a responsibility to ensure that Iraq complies fully with international law," British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw told the 190-nation General Assembly. "We have to be clear to Iraq and to ourselves about the consequences which will flow from a failure by Iraq to meet its obligations."

Election unrest spreads

SRINAGAR, India -- Indian soldiers shot and killed nine suspected Islamic rebels Sunday in a border sweep just hours before the start of Kashmir's crucial state elections. The shootout occurred after a key government minister survived an assassination attempt earlier in the day. Two guards of Tourism Minister Sakina Yatoo were killed when attackers ambushed her well-guarded campaign convoy, officials said. Three others were wounded.

Florida highway closed for terror concern; 3 detained

MIAMI -- Three people in two cars were detained Friday along a South Florida highway on suspicion of plotting a terrorist attack. Authorities shut down the interstate as they used dogs and a robot to search for explosives.

Paying for our war with Iraq

Webber pleads not guilty to charges of lying

Experienced team tees-off

The IU women's golf team opens its season with the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich. this weekend. This will mark the fourth time that the team has taken part in the tournament, which will feature 11 teams from the Midwest region. The Hoosiers have performed well in this tournament previously, winning the event in 1996 and 1997.

IU faces tough weekend

The field hockey team heads north this weekend to take part in the Big Ten/Big East Challenge hosted by Syracuse University, the beginning of a six game road trip. They will battle Rutgers on Saturday afternoon and face off against Villanova on Sunday morning. Other teams representing the Big Ten in the tournament are Ohio State and Michigan State.

Air Force, Hartwick pose physical threats

Physical teams have caused the IU men's soccer team trouble early this season and that's just what they will face this weekend as they travel to the Butler Classic for a pair of weekend matches. The No. 9 ranked Hoosier squad will face the Air Force Academy at 6 p.m. tonight at Kuntz Field in Indianapolis and will then go to battle with Hartwick College at noon Sunday. The games begin a five-game road trip for the Hoosiers.

IU shuts out Musketeers

IU got physical and put in a winning performance Thursday night during their game against Xavier. The star of the game was junior forward Shelly Gruszka who scored the game's only two goals. Gruszka first hit the back of the net off an assist from junior defender Carly Everett in the 23rd minute.

Parking revenue profitable

IU Parking Operations stands to gain almost twice the amount of revenues from parking violations as Indianapolis this year. In 2001, $1.2 million were collected in fines for the city of Indianapolis, with the same amount being budgeted for this year, according to Peter McGommery, director of the city's Ordinance Violations Bureau.

Men's fall rush kicks off today

Four o'clock today marks the beginning of many students' foray into a distinct culture at IU. The kickoff of men's formal rush, beginning with registration from 4 to 7 p.m. today in Dunn Meadow, marks many students' first contact with the large greek system at IU. With this first contact, many rushees may keep stereotypes about fraternities in the back of their minds.

Right here in Bloomington, people are waging war almost every day. They fight in Medieval Europe, in 2025 and in intergalactic space. They decimate each other with cannons, lasers or plasma weapons. And they do all this while huddling over a table packed with Styrofoam scenery and painted pewter playing pieces, located in the back of the Game Preserve, 117 Fountain Square.

IUPD seeks intruder

Lock your doors. That is the advice given to the female residents at Wright Quad by the IU Police Department. In the past week there have been seven incidents reported of a male intruder entering unlocked women's dorm rooms and restrooms in Wright Quad.

Counting on the Crows?

Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. today for the Counting Crows live in concert Thursday, Oct. 24 at 8 p.m. in the IU Auditorium. The Crows were scheduled to play at the auditorium last year, but issues concerning the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11 and work on their new album, Hard Candy, got in the way and the band cancelled the show the same day tickets went on sale.

Mathers Museum exhibit to showcase local Latinos

Leaders urged to confront Iraq
