Corvette moving to new garage

The final chapter in the story of the IU Student Association's Corvette ended over the weekend with a lucky eBay shopper taking home the controversial car for the price of over $40,000. The car's original "Buy-It-Now" price on the world's largest online trading center was $45,000, but was changed to $43,500 during the auction. The Corvette's buyer paid $41,500 for the car after 44 bids on eBay failed to hit the reserve price, the minimum price set by the seller.

Interim president gets help

Kenneth R.R. Gros Louis, who retired as IUB Chancellor and vice president for academic affairs on June 30, 2001, has been named as a special adviser to interim president Gerald Bepko. Bepko, who is retiring as IUPUI Chancellor this year, will fill in for IU President Myles Brand, who will leave Jan. 1 to serve as president of the NCAA, until a permanent replacement can be found.

Breaking New Ground

The Kelley School of Business formally dedicated the Graduate and Executive Education Center, its new state-of-the-art addition at a ceremony held at the Business School Friday. The new building, which offers over 180,000 square feet of classroom space, is historic for IU, as the first addition to Kelley School since its construction in 1966. "We are very proud of the Kelley School of Business," IUB Chancellor Sharon Brehm said. "We know the new facilities will allow a great school of business to excel even further."

New home planned for alternative sports

Bloomington officials are beginning a search for a designer to build a new park. There might be benches, but they won't be used for sitting. There might be handrails, but not for holding while on a walk. And there will probably be a vertical wall, but it won't be adjoined to any building. If this sounds like an unusual kind of park, that's because it is being designed specifically for skateboarders and in-line skaters.

Don't take away my sports bra

The Student Recreational Sports Complex and the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation are entertaining the notion of implementing a dress code. This is about as good an idea as setting Pee Wee Herman loose in the crowd of a Harry Potter showing. The proposed change would outlaw tank tops and cut-off T-shirts (yes, even for sweet dudes like you). The Fitness and Wellness Council is encouraging feedback and suggestions before they reach a verdict. I encourage every student affected by this issue to emphatically oppose a dress code and voice their opinions to these officials.

Three is the magic number

Last year I was one of four tenants in an off-campus house in Bloomington. Had only three of us been living there instead of four, our house would have been quiet and clean. Three is the magic number that turns sloppy college students into Martha Stewarts. When students live in threes, they lose the desire to throw parties and instead choose silent study as a weekend pastime. According to Bloomington's occupancy law, which restricts more than three unrelated adults from living in the same house, neighborhood problems will disappear along with that fourth roommate. This ordinance has been in place since 1985 and is currently under review of the Indiana Supreme Court.

IUSA helping student groups

There are nearly 500 student groups registered with the Student Activities Office at IU. But with the current rules set forth by the board of trustees, not all of those student groups have access to the basic amenities that come with being a registered student. With the passage of the Student Group Support Act by the IUSA Congress Nov. 19, this should all change and rightfully so.

Sean Combs decries world AIDS effort

CAPE TOWN, South Africa -- Rapper Sean "P. Diddy" Combs accused the media of ignoring the severity of the AIDS epidemic before performing at an AIDS-awareness concert Saturday. "I don't think you see enough of this story in your face," an indignant Combs told reporters. "There are millions and millions of people that are dying and a lot of it is ... because it's Africans, it's black people that are dying at this high rate."

'Father Psalm' delivers powerful anti-smoking message

Father Psalm," opened last Friday at the Bloomington Playwrights Project, located at 312 S. Washington. Part of the Cabaret Nouveau series, the show ran roughly 52 minutes and told the story of the horse racing Teater family. Duncan is a 13-year-old boy who must watch his father die from emphysema, because he would "walk a mile for a camel." Duncan Teater starred in this one-man show that told the experience of an admired father going from a strong protector of his wife, and a man who made his son feel secure as he helped teach him to tie a Windsor knot; to being kept alive by a ventilator.

Bypass Little Tibet

After eating countless Big Ten's and Jimmy John's subs, my friend Avi Loewenstein and I craved ethnic food. We wanted the stuff that you'd get in mother's kitchen on lazy Sundays. Unfortunately, Little Tibet is not the place to find it. After seeing the quaint converted house, we decided to give Little Tibet a try. After all, how can a place called "Little Tibet" not be true to Tibetan cuisine? We made our way to the entrance, bypassing rows of Tibetan prayer flags and other various flags. After a few brief awkward moments, we were greeted by the hostess and offered menus. It was a bit confusing at first because we were never told to seat ourselves. We finally figured it out.

Middle East attacks spark fear

KUWAIT CITY -- In Kuwait, two American soldiers are shot on a quiet stretch of desert highway. In Lebanon, an American nurse is murdered at a clinic. In Jordan, a U.S. diplomat is gunned down in his front yard. As U.S. soldiers prepare for possible war with Iraq, and as violence continues in American-allied Israel and the Palestinian territories, a series of attacks on Americans in the Middle East has sparked fears that even friendly nations like Kuwait are no longer enclaves of safety.

Miss World pageant moved

LAGOS, Nigeria -- The regional governor warned rioters would be shot on sight Sunday as hundreds of people fled the northern Nigerian city of Kaduna after four days of religious violence over the Miss World pageant killed 200 people. The violence among Muslims and Christians began after a newspaper article last week said Islam's founding prophet would have chosen a Miss World contestant for a wife. The pageant was then moved to London and the contestants packed their gear and flew to the British capital.

Hopes for post-season play remain alive

The end of the 2002 Hoosier volleyball regular season looms ever closer as IU is looking to capture an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament. This weekend pitted the Hoosiers against the highly touted Minnesota Golden Gophers Friday and the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday. The No. 6 Minnesota squad lived up to their billing by sweeping IU 3-0. But, IU did not leave the weekend empty handed as it overpowered Iowa 3-1.

Weekend wins move IU up in standings

Saturday's second period against Ferris State took nearly an hour to complete, but it was over too quickly for IU. The Hoosiers began the period down 0-2. Four minutes into the second, IU junior forward Bob Pesavento received an elbowing penalty and the IU bench received another penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, giving FSU a two minute three-on-five advantage.

Freshmen show talents

An assumption about basketball is that experience is invaluable. While that is true, the energy youth brings should not be underestimated. The IU women's basketball team received vigor and quality play from its freshmen this past weekend to claim the championship of the Hampton Inn/Fazoli's Classic. The freshmen foursome of Cyndi Valentin, Angela Hawkins, Brigett Branson and Kali Kullberg greatly contributed to the Hoosiers ninth Classic title.

Team hopes for national impact

The IU Women's Cross Country team will head to Terre Haute today for their first NCAA Championship appearance since 1990. Junior Audrey Giesler said she is pleased with how much more competitive the team is this year.

No. 15 team heads to Nationals

Today the No. 15 men's cross country team heads to Terre Haute to take on the best in the nation at the NCAA Championships. The team earned an at-large bid to the meet after a fourth place finish at the Great Lakes Regional in West Lafayette last weekend. Coach Robert Chapman said the team should be around 15th place if they run similar to their race at Regionals, but the team hopes to finish in the top 10. The team race is so deep that if they do not have a great race, they could fall back to around 20th, he said.

Unbeaten streak reaches five at Invite

This weekend the Hoosiers took to the pool and continued their undefeated streak. The No. 13 ranked Hoosiers, winners of five in a row, defeated No. 19 Miami (Fla.), Tennessee, Arkansas, Clemson, Evansville, New Mexico, and Cincinnati, with the second place team trailing by 245.5 points at the Indiana Open Invitational. IU hosted the event, a three-day competition, which ended early Sunday night. IU started off slowly, finishing fifth in the 200-free relay with the team of senior Anne Williams, junior Meghan Medendorp, and sophomores Erin Smith and Tammy Kostner. IU's B-relay finished tenth with a time of 1:38.60.

Team wins Classic tourney

The women's basketball team proved this weekend at the Hampton Inn/Fazoli's Classic tournament that they are not a team to be ignored. Their 90-34 win over Wofford marked the most one-sided victory for the Hoosiers since 1991. If that wasn't enough, the Hoosiers came back to the court Saturday evening to defeat Ball State 103-95 in a double overtime game that named the 2-0 Hoosiers winners of the tournament.

Purdue offense controls game, IU falters

The Hoosiers didn't have enough time on Saturday to overcome their 17-3 halftime deficit and lost to Purdue 34-10. The Boilermakers won back the Old Oaken Bucket by keeping a tired Hoosier defense on the field most of the second half. IU (3-9, 1-7) struggled running the ball early and led to three punts on their opening three drives. Meanwhile, Purdue (6-6, 4-4) got on the board on their first drive with a 60-yard pass from freshman Brandon Kirsch to junior John Standeford.
