Get Enthused! 'Curb' is changing the sitcom

The big TV networks have a big problem: the kiddies aren't gobbling up their sitcoms like the old days. Of the top ten shows (according to Nielsen Media during the week of Feb. 16-22), only two, "Friends" and "Everybody Loves Raymond" (both well past their prime) are situation comedies. The rest of the top ten is rounded out with both nights of "American Idol," drama series and reality shows.

'Matchstick' a steal on DVD

Roy Waller (Nicolas Cage) continually reminds people during "Matchstick Men" that he is not a con man, but rather a con artist. "I don't take people's money," he says explaining the difference. "They give it to me." The sentiment works well. This isn't just a regular con movie; it's a clever and classy rendition of what could have been the same old song-and-dance.

Metal impresarios use 'Music as a Weapon'

Disturbed, Chevelle, Taproot and Unloco had so much fun on the Music as a Weapon II Tour they decided to put together a CD/DVD chronicling it. Both the tour and CD have the exact same music -- excepting a bonus video for Disturbed's "Liberate."

'Schizophrenic' more like 'Nymphomaniac'

JC Chasez was diagnosed with the wrong disease. The former *NSYNC-er's recently-released solo debut, entitled Schizophrenic, should have hit stores with the more appropriate title of Nymphomaniac. There is an absurd amount of sexual innuendoes, most of which are downright funny considering JC used to run around wearing mouse-ears on "The Mickey Mouse Club" a decade ago.

Another whodunnit, who cares

You are probably already familiar with the plotline of this film: cop gets promoted to Homicide division, bodies instantly start turning up, cop gets put on the case only to realize she knows all the victims, cop must fight her own demons and beat the odds to solve the case. That sums up the movie in a nice little package, only I may have made it sound better than it really was.

On Ash Wednesday, Mel Gibson released what may be the most controversial film in decades, "The Passion of the Christ," a blockbuster recounting the final 12 hours of Jesus' life and his ultimate death on the cross. 'Dread' attainable as a liter-a-cola

A year or so ago, my friends and I were in the video store trying to decide what to rent. Somebody suggested "Super Troopers," and since I wasn't paying, I agreed. The previews looked more dumb than funny, so I wasn't expecting much when we turned it on. Needless to say, it quickly became one of my favorite comedies, both to watch and quote.

Legislators put a hold on gay marriage discussion

INDIANAPOLIS -- Partisan tensions over a proposed gay-marriage ban subsided in the House on Tuesday, and both parties went to work on other legislation, sending several bills to Gov. Joe Kernan's desk. "We're back here doing the work of the people," said Republican Minority Leader Brian Bosma of Indianapolis. He said it was still possible, however, Republicans would try again to raise floor debate on a proposed state constitutional ban on gay marriage.

Rec Sports reinstates intramural swim meet

Thirty-three swimmers turned out for the first intramural swim meet since 1997 Saturday at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in the Student Recreational Sports Center. This event used to take place annually, but because of lack of participation, RecSports cut the event. But this year, the intramural swim meet is back by popular demand, said Assistant Director for Intramurals Josh Downing. "We used to have this event all the time," Downing said. "'97 was the last time we had it as an intramural event. We stopped it due to lack of participation, but last year, a group of students came to our intramural sports council and recommended we do this. Then the intramural sports council came to us and said, 'Hey, we should do this,' so that is how this event came about today."

Poets express viewpoints, share work

Memorial Union Gallery to read and listen to short works of personal creativity. The poetry slam began with a Union Board representative offering free coffee and cookies and opening the microphone to all in attendance, asking those interested to sign up on the clipboard. She then introduced the first poet on the list. He began with a poem he titled "Dandelions." With his left hand in his pocket and his notebook in his right, he began to speak in metaphors and asked the question, "Can you really own love in the way you can own a cliché?" He read a few more poems, adding in side notes such as, "That's a word I made up." He then left the small wooden platform, disguised as a stage, open for the next poet to be introduced.

IUSA complaints to be decided tonight

IU Student Association campaign tickets celebrated the end of election season with the traditional slew of Election Code violation complaints Tuesday night. Representatives from each ticket gathered in the Indiana Memorial Union Solarium to address each of the seven complaints filed in front of the IUSA Elections Commission.
