Daniels to visit convention floor, city events today NEW YORK - Indiana Republican gubernatorial candidate Mitch Daniels is expected to make an appearance at the Republican National Convention today. Daniels' press secretary Mark Lotter said the candidate will attend meetings with the Indiana delegates and supporters, attend various events and then will make his way to Madison Square Garden later in the afternoon. Daniels is running against Democratic incumbent Joe Kernan in November's election.

Al-Sadr calls for cease-fire

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Rebel Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr called for his followers across Iraq to end fighting against U.S. and Iraqi forces and is planning to join the political process in the coming days, an al-Sadr aide said Monday. Iraqi oil exports came to a halt after a rash of insurgent attacks on the country's petroleum infrastructure, the country's main source of income, senior oil company officials said. Oil prices edged higher in advance of the opening of trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

AD search winding down

After three months of searching, IU will soon know who will lead its athletics department. IU Alumni Association President Ken Beckley, who is the leader of the search committee, said the search is now focused on one candidate and that an announcement will likely be made early next week.

Students plead guilty to felony recklessness

Two students involved in an October 2003 drag-racing crash -- that left another student dead -- pleaded guilty to felony criminal recklessness Friday for their roles in the event. Junior Daipayan Banerjee, 21, and senior Patrick McBride, 22, will avoid prison time and resume classes this fall under plea agreements.

Coalition to lobby for law change

Professor writes book criticizing media's portrayal of black men

Dennis Rome, a criminal justice professor and sociologist, believes the biggest obstacle facing race relations in this country is in the media's portrayal of black men, which is why he wrote "Black Demons: Mass Media's Depiction of the African American Male Criminal Stereotype," published last month by Praeger Publishers.

Caribbean claims Little League World Series championship

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Carlos Pineda struck out 11 and Jurickson Profar hit a two-run homer as Pabao Little League of Willemstad, Curacao, took an early lead and held on for a 5-2 victory over Conejo Valley of Thousand Oaks, Calif., in the Little League World Series championship Sunday night. California scored both of its runs in the top of the sixth, and had runners on first and third with two outs. James Brady hit to first baseman Christopher Garia, who won a race to make the final out.

IU falls to Cal, beats Stanford

IU women's field hockey team opened up the 2004-05 season this weekend with mixed results. The Hoosiers traveled west to northern California to face off against University of California-Berkeley and Stanford.

Rumblefish expensive, well served fare

As a general rule, fish restaurants can be divided fairly easily into two groups: dive-like fish-fry joints and the overly pricey formal fish restaurants. Dive-worthy fish places are great: There is nothing better than sitting on old rickety benches with a motley assortment of locals while eating fish that you swear was caught only minutes ago.

Hoosiers kick off season with Milwaukee Cup

The IU women's soccer team started off its 2004 season by claiming ownership of the Milwaukee Cup. The Hoosiers were on their way to defeating Wisconsin-Milwaukee Sunday afternoon after senior forward Kim Grodek scored her first goal of the match in the fifth minute and then scored again in the 32nd minute, receiving a pass from freshman Lindsay McCarthy. IU was able to hold off Wisconsin-Milwaukee after building a two-goal lead with solid goaltending by junior goalkeeper Lauren Fabbro, who recorded four saves.

Knight files suit against University

Six months ago, IU thought its court battle with former men's basketball coach Bobby Knight was finished, but Knight filled suit again Thursday. The suit names IU and the Indiana Insurance Co. as defendants in a lawsuit alleging IU did not pay for Knight's legal expenses during his court battle with former IU assistant coach Ron Felling as well as a breach of contract.

It's gonna be a good season

This year's race for the Big Ten football title is already shaping up to be good one despite the fact none of teams have played a game yet. Six of the 11 teams have been ranked in the top 25 in preseason polls, with Michigan and Ohio State both cracking the top 10. Last season, Michigan State wasn't ranked in the preseason polls and then simply won seven of its first eight games, including wins over Minnesota and Iowa on the way to a top-15 ranking. So who will be this year's surprise team of the Big Ten?

Colts waiting on physical before announcing deal INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Colts are waiting for second-round draft pick Bob Sanders to pass a physical before announcing he has signed a contract. Sanders, the last holdout from this year's draft, reportedly agreed to terms with the Colts Thursday night.

U.S. tops charts for third straight Summer Olympics

ATHENS, Greece -- The United States finished atop the medal charts for the third straight Summer Olympics, with Russia the overall runner-up and China second in gold medals -- its best showing ever and the leading edge of a surge by Asian teams. Six nations won gold medals for the first time; the trailblazers included an Arab sheik marksman and an Israeli windsurfer. Two other countries, Paraguay and Eritrea, won their first medals of any sort.

NEW YORK -- Vice President Dick Cheney made an appearance at the Republican National Convention Sunday for a sound check on the stage inside Madison Square Garden. Cheney read from a teleprompter and adjusted the podium to his liking for Wednesday's speech.
