Steering the journalism ship

·

As was covered in the Indiana Daily Student last week, the School of Journalism has a new dean-elect, ready to take over when current Dean Trevor Brown retires after more than 20 years this June. Yes, that's right. For everyone keeping score, we have a winner after two searches, hundreds of candidates and two sets of three finalists each. A very extensive search this was.

The rumbling of cyclists on a cinder track is not the only noise heard at Bill Armstrong Stadium right now. The IU men's soccer team plays at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Yeagley Field to kick off the two-time defending national champions' spring soccer season against Lindsay-Wilson, with a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee against Bradley.

Year of parity should provide fast, close Women's race

·

There's been a continuing trend in the women's field ever since the Spring Series Events were instituted in 2000. That year, eight riders finished within ten seconds of the Individual Time Trials winner. The next year there were 27. In 2002, it was back down to nine, but in 2003, back up to 30. Last year, eight riders finished within the ten second window, and this year, the trend continued.

Hans Christian Andersen honored in Denmark

·

COPENHAGEN, Denmark -- In the past months, Danes have lived in a true Hans Christian Andersen frenzy, which some say has been no fairy tale. As his countrymen get ready to celebrate his bicentennial, the image of Andersen, who wrote such classics as "The Emperor's New Clothes" and "The Little Mermaid," can be seen everywhere -- on coins, in post offices, on beer labels, on posters announcing shows celebrating the Dane, on dinnerware and on baby clothes and accessories especially designed for the jubilee.

Students aim to bring modern dance to IU

·

Jamie Dowd and Ricardo Alvarez are preparing for their finals. The culmination of their studies at IU comes in the shape of a dance production; produced by them, danced by them, financed by them and designed by them. While most students might study countless hours for exams, Dowd and Alvarez said they have each spent more than 500 hours on this production, hoping to bring modern dance back to the IU community in this free venue.

God created evolution

·

Darwin's theory of evolution and the Bible are neither mutually exclusive nor irreconcilable. Yet t would appear from recent news that no one holds this position. The two sides have dug their trenches and now are embattled. The battleground: the U.S. education system. In a recent survey, 31 percent of American schoolteachers said they felt pressured to teach creationism and other non-scientific alternatives in the classroom. Only 5 percent of the teachers felt the pressure from school administrators.

The great enemy

·

There is an epidemic running rampant throughout the world population. The malady sneaks up on its victim with little warning or cause, and there is no definitive cure. The ailment generally has a short life span in the human body but can reside for more than two decades. While present, the condition disrupts respiratory and oral functions and can even be fatal. The pandemic that I speak of is commonly known as "the hiccups."

Bordering on tension

·

Who said Americans aren't arrogant? Sure, we are. For one, we're the fattest people in the world; we get as much of anything as we want, and we just throw away the excess. But now, some of us are doing more to prove this point, and it involves a very hot topic. A group in Arizona, calling itself "The Minutemen," has decided to take the law into its own hands.
