Fellowship awards hope to keep new Hoosier graduates in Indiana

In 2001, business leaders of prestigious entrepreneurial companies throughout Indiana addressed a growing problem and conglomerated to form the Gov. Bob Orr Fellowship Award, an attempt to encourage the brightest Hoosier graduates to stay in the state.

'Naughty by Nature' to play at Zeta Beta Tau this weekend

Who's down with O.P.P.? ZBT. Bypassing the new-school, young rap stars of today, Zeta Beta Tau fraternity will play host to old-school rap nostalgia with a Naughty By Nature concert Friday in its parking lot on North Jordan Avenue. This year will be the third time in four years ZBT has held a Little 500 concert. Last year Bone Thugs-n-Harmony performed, and in 2002 Fabolous graced the stage.

It's 9:30 p.m. on a Monday night, and Pablo Svirsky, Sean Donnelly and Dustin Koester are setting up for a rehearsal in the basement of the music annex. Speaking above amps sputtering feedback and the feet of a drum kit scraping the floor, Svirsky tells a story about one of his acoustic gigs played with Donnelly.

Secret Service looks into art exhibit with political views

CHICAGO -- The Secret Service sent agents to investigate a college art gallery exhibit of mock postage stamps, one depicting President Bush with a gun pointed at his head, to guarantee "this is nothing more than artwork with a political statement," a spokesman said Tuesday. The exhibit, called "Axis of Evil: The Secret History of Sin," opened last week at Columbia College's Glass Curtain Gallery in Chicago. The 47 artists designed fake postage stamps addressing issues such as the clergy sex abuse scandal in the Catholic Church, racism, and the war in Iraq.

NHL labor talks to resume next week with new plan

NEW YORK -- When NHL labor talks resume, a new plan will be up for discussion that attempts to blend elements from both sides' vision of how players will be paid. Negotiations will probably resume next week, during which a new, hybrid concept -- which addresses the relationship between player costs and league revenues -- will be brought to the table, a source close to the negotiations told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday.

NBA, NHL, others turn in drug policies

WASHINGTON -- The NBA and NHL were among six groups that turned over documents about their drug-testing policies to the congressional committee looking into steroids in sports. The House Government Reform Committee had set Tuesday as a deadline for getting information about drug programs and test results. Major League Soccer, the ATP, USA Track & Field and the U.S. Soccer Federation responded in time, while USA Cycling asked for and was granted an extension because of a snowstorm near its headquarters.

2-year-old team gets ready to hit ice at nationals

German SWAT team rescues hostages

ENNEPETAL, Germany -- German police commandos slipped into a house where a knife-wielding man was holding four schoolgirls hostage Tuesday, surprising the suspect and taking him into custody while rescuing his captives after a five-hour standoff. The man inflicted a superficial knife wound on the stomach of a 16-year-old hostage, whom he held with three 11-year-olds, before he was captured by a police SWAT team that entered the red brick house at the end of a cul-de-sac shortly after 6 p.m., lead investigator Ulrich Kuhne said.

NCAA legislation could add 12th game

INDIANAPOLIS -- With opposition only from the Atlantic Coast Conference, the NCAA Division I Management Council has backed Division I-A and I-AA schools' adding a 12th football game starting with the 2006 season.

Aesop 'rocks' the Bluebird

Spring season heads to Indy

The back-to-back national champion IU men's soccer team looks to continue its string of solid spring outings as it heads to North Central High School in Indianapolis to play Butler at 7 p.m. tonight. North Carolina native crowned Miss USA

BALTIMORE -- Fashion marketing student Chelsea Cooley, 21, from Charlotte, N.C., got into pageants for the scholarships. "I fell in love with them, and it snowballed," she said. "And here I am, Miss USA." Cooley, the reigning Miss North Carolina, was crowned Miss USA in the 54th annual pageant Monday night. The new titleholder will compete May 30 in the Miss Universe competition in Bangkok, Thailand.

MTV doesn't suck?

Let's get something straight: I hate MTV. I dug it when I was a kid and it actually showed music videos (good stuff like the Smashing Pumpkins' "Tonight, Tonight" and "1979," the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage," Weezer's "Buddy Holly" and Aerosmith's Alicia Silverstone trilogy) or had decent shows like "Beavis and Butt-head," but in recent years it has turned into something else entirely. What's the point of having something called "Music Television" that doesn't show any damned videos? You got me? Thankfully, someone of some modicum of intelligence over at the Viacom-owned corporation saw it fit to remedy the problem. The solution: the newly revamped MTV2.

Caucasia examines biracial identity

"Caucasia" by Danzy Senna captures the life of two biracial children who must fit into alternative worlds after their parents separate their family because of escalating racial violence in the mid-1970s. The main character, Birdie, who can "pass" as white, goes into hiding with her white mother. Her older sister, Cole, remains with her black father because she cannot "pass."
