New dean of the School of Continuing Studies named

Today IU President Adam Herbert announced the new dean of the School of Continuing Studies. Daniel Callison, a professor and executive associate dean of the School of Library and Information Sciences in Indianapolis, has accepted the appointment and will take over the position subject to being confirmed by the IU board of trustees at its Nov. 3 meeting.

IU Outdoor Pool to host Cardboard Boat Regatta

Watermelons, animals, planes and pirate ships will be sinking in the IU Outdoor Pool this afternoon. The sixth annual Cardboard Boat Regatta, featuring homemade crafts resembling various objects, begins at 4 p.m. today. The Council for Advancing Student Leadership hosts the regatta as a fundraiser for student scholarships.

IUSA to use freshmen as interns

The IU Student Association has selected 13 freshmen for its 2006 Fall Freshman Internship Program. With the help of these interns, IUSA will be able to "extend its reach to become an all-encompassing body," said Phillip Smith, IUSA chief of operations and intern coordinator.

Democracy Plaza doomed?

A new group on campus is attempting to convince students to participate in public discussion of political issues. Democracy Plaza plans to have panel discussion sessions where students can voice their opinions and listen to experts speak. The group also plans to put dry erase boards up in various locations across campus that will ask specific questions about current issues. Students will respond via marker.

When the term "hockey" comes to mind, it usually conjures up images of fast-paced play on the ice. But for the IU field hockey club, the action is all on the grass. Club president Audrey Matthias said the co-ed club offers a fun, relaxed environment for those interested in playing field hockey.

The IU men's soccer team got its first home win of the season as the Hoosiers defeated boarder-rival University of Kentucky 1-0 in overtime Wednesday night.

E-mail, voice mail to cross wires

Students no longer have an excuse for not checking their e-mail. This fall the campus voice mail service extended its unified messaging service to students who live on campus, allowing them to retrieve their e-mail through voice mail when they do not have access to a computer and vice versa.

$11M ticket claimed; winner unidentified

The secret's out: The largest lottery jackpot ever won in Bloomington has been claimed. A representative for the 2006 Stewardship Revocable Trust claimed the winning $11 million Hoosier Lotto ticket Wednesday morning, according to a press release from the Hoosier Lottery.
