A glorious weekend

·

My weekend plans were brilliant. The weekend after the first week of classes I planned on going hard, relentless and without abandon. Coach Hep would say I was living with "dispatch." I was going to squeeze in as many IU athletic events into two and a half days that time and space would allow. And I did.

Sampson silent on Gordon

·

Ask Kelvin Sampson how IU's first few weeks of practice have gone, and he'll talk at length about his team still adjusting to him and his coaching style. The first-year coach will expound upon how even though point guard Earl Calloway is a senior, he's really just a freshman in Sampson's new system. But mention the words "recruiting," "Bruce Weber," "Illinois" or (gulp) "Eric Gordon," and Sampson's demeanor changes. His answers are short and cold. He'll ask you to ask the question again, though he likely understood you and your intentions the first time. Then he'll say he can't comment about it.

MYERS GUILTY

·

MARTINSVILLE -- It took a jury of his peers 50 minutes to find John R. Myers II guilty of the 2000 murder of IU sophomore Jill Behrman. Myers remained stoic, as he had throughout most of the 11-day trial, as Judge Christopher Burnham read the verdict. Myers, 31, hugged defense attorney Patrick Baker and, as police led him out of the courtroom in handcuffs, winked at his family, clicked his tongue and said simply, "Love ya." Jill's parents, Eric and Marilyn Behrman, told reporters afterward they were relieved the trial was over. "We're pleased with the jury's decision," Eric Behrman said. "We know it was hard for them to make." Jill Behrman vanished during a morning bike ride May 31, 2000. Her bicycle was found two days later in a cornfield outside Ellettsville, less than a mile from the trailer Myers was living in at the time. Hunters found her skeletal remains in March 2003 near Paragon, Ind. Forensic evidence suggested Behrman was shot in the back of the head at close range with a shotgun. Prosecutors had no direct evidence to make their case. Myers and Jill Behrman had no known relationship, no murder weapon has been found and there were no witnesses to the crime.

Got what it takes?

·

As election day approaches, it's easy to lose patience with the constant barrage of scandals and cheap shots. Every. Single. Day. Kind of turns you off politics, doesn't it? Well, don't discount governing positions just yet because IU is now soliciting applications for its next student trustee. When current student trustee Casey Cox's term ends this spring, some lucky student will get the unique opportunity to step into his shoes and do, well, whatever it is that trustees do.

Bald is Beautiful

·

Caucasian men face daunting odds of keeping a full head of hair throughout their lifetimes. All Caucasian men possess the inherited tendency for male pattern balding, also known as androgenetic alopecia. Eventually, 96 percent of those men will lose hair to some degree, but because of variability in the expression of the genes, many will not have noticeable early hair loss. While it is possible for women to develop androgenetic alopecia, it is much less common. Scientists have found that black men are four times less likely than Caucasians to prematurely bald. Losing hair might be a horrifying concept for some, but others see a silver lining.
