Vegan diet patriotic

This Fourth of July, caring Americans can help win freedom for animals in factory farms by adopting a vegan diet. Animals value their lives just as we value ours. They yearn to be with their loved ones, feel the warmth of the sun, breathe fresh air and feel grass beneath their feet.

Groups students compete in summer intramurals program

·

For members in IU’s Groups program, the fun has finally begun. Last week marked the start of the intramural summer season for these students, which kicked off with two days of extreme dodgeball in the racquetball courts of the Student Recreational Sports Center.

Ann Coulter’s attack shows media’s bias

The conservative goddess Ann Coulter has stirred the muck again. Of course, if there weren’t so much muck available to stir, she’d likely have nothing to do. I don’t agree with what she said, but I do agree with her right to say it, as well as her severely overlooked purpose.

McRobbie lunches with new students

·

Most students go four years without ever meeting the University president. But Michael Coleman got to sit at a small table and eat lunch with him. And Coleman hasn’t even started classes at IU.

IMU Executive Director’s appointment ‘shameful,’ but fortunate

Union Board President Sarah McDonough’s article (“No student input for the IMU Executive Director,” June 27) was wholly warranted. It is shameful that the IU administration did not include students in the process of appointing a new director of the Indiana Memorial Union.

Soldiers not terrorists

In response to “Wake Up!” by Grace Low (June 25): Ms. Low has good reason to be angry at the deaths of civilians in a recent air strike in Afghanistan. However, the U.S. military should not bear the brunt of her criticisms. In describing the air strike, Ms. Low downplayed the significance of the terrorists’ presence in the targeted building. The primary target was Abu Laith al-Libi, al-Qaida’s leader in Afghanistan and one of Osama bin Laden’s top lieutenants.

Transfer credit agreements just the beginning

The recent flurry of agreements in Indiana allowing students to seamlessly transfer community college credits to four-year public institutions is welcome news. These agreements are the first of many steps Indiana must take to position itself for rapid economic change in a world where high school graduates are no longer guaranteed positions in the middle class.

Clinton/Moore '08

·

When Michael Moore sees injustice, he does not waste time pandering to our rational side. Instead he pulls our heartstrings, appeals to our sympathy for the everyman and points an angry, nay, incensed finger at the powers that be. He does all this and more in “SiCKO,” his new documentary about the American health care system.

No Summer of Love

·

I am so tired of reading about the Summer of Love. More specifically, I’m tired of reading fawning, nostalgia-dripping, Boomer-ego-stroking articles about the 40th anniversary of the Summer of Love. “It was a magical time of free love and consciousness-altering experimentation,” you say? “It showed the power of young people to change the world,” you say? So, you say you got a revolution?

Sink the Quiz

Last week, a group of researchers released their findings about the “Thirsty Thursday” drinking habits of 3,341 volunteer undergraduates. The study, published in the journal “Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research,” found that about half of students who had late or no Friday classes drank on Thursday nights, but only one-third of students drank who had classes at or before 10 a.m. Furthermore, two-thirds of those drinkers with late or no Friday classes consumed a “binge amount” of alcohol.

Americana acoustic band stops at Bluebird Nightclub Saturday

·

For a band that has been together more than six years and played more than 700 shows, Railroad Earth’s musical philosophy is simple: “It’s really just about the music. If people are there to hear it, it’s just extra,” Tim Carbone, the band’s violinist, said.
