Jerry Baldwin, ex-head coach of the University of Louisiana-Lafayette and the first black head coach at any Louisiana state university, won a $2 million lawsuit against his former employer on a claim that he was fired for his race. And while the school insists he was removed from his post for a laughable record – he lost 80 percent of his games – sizable evidence points to the contrary. According to Baldwin, his predecessor and successor – both white – were given new equipment for the team, as well as more resources at their disposal to market the team to the community.

We do not torture.” So says George W. Bush. Without telling us what constitutes torture or telling us what methods our interrogators use, President Bush wants us to simply take him at his word. And, like the spineless pushovers they are, the Democratic Congress gladly acquiesced, with many voting for the Military Commissions Act in October 2006 that essentially ended any judicial review for terror detainees.

Smoking ban boldness

Since the announcement of former IU President Adam Herbert’s plan to ban smoking on all IU campuses, the IU community has been at odds, taking up sides drawn along a smoke-blurred line. On Thursday Provost Karen Hanson sent by e-mail the policy that students, faculty and staff will be required to follow as of January 2008. The policy itself will be beneficial if it rids the IU campus of smoking – preventing the harm caused by second-hand smoke, without hampering the rights of individuals.

For me, the day after Halloween is one of the happiest of the year. While the rest of the world lies in bed, moaning about how Almond Joys should not be accompanied by blueberry vodka, I get up early and greet the world with an enthusiasm unmatched on any other day of the year. You see, after the pumpkins start to rot and the cotton spider webs blow away, icicle lights and candy canes begin to manifest themselves. Ladies and gentlemen, we have officially entered “the holiday season.”

Do you like food? Are you broke? If so, this column is for you. Last week I wrote about America’s new food culture. I argued that the good life, as it is marketed, remains elusive to middle-class Americans because fancy organic and international foods are more expensive than regular comfort food.

Last Defense

Much has changed in the last three years of IU field hockey. Games have moved from Mellencamp Pavilion to the new IU Field Hockey Field, players have come and gone and lineups have been altered. But if one thing has remained constant, it has been the presence of senior goalkeeper Haley Exner in net. Exner, who has started all but one game over the last three years and earned All-Big Ten honors the past two seasons, will make her final home start Sunday when IU (7-9, 0-5) plays Northwestern on Senior Day. During her career, Exner played a crucial role in the growth of Hoosier field hockey, and her skill and leadership in goal have made her the face of a young program now established as a national power.

Rolling with the Rollergirls

The Bleeding Heartland Rollergirls sure have interesting socks. The colors and textures blur the skaters as they purr by in a circle, gaining speed. Orange and red stripes, black with red hearts, white with two small green stripes grazing the top, brown stripes, white socks with the cookie monster from Sesame Street, and shiny golden tights roll by as the women gain speed.
