'Allegiance' strays from Russian spy tropes

·

'Allegiance' Grade: B Replacing “Parenthood” in NBC’s Thursday primetime line up is the mysterious “Allegiance,” and it has some serious potential.  Telling the story of a family of secret Russian spies, the “Allegiance” pilot really changed the way I think about espionage programs.  Time and time again television programs and film represent secret Russian spies out to get Americans, consider the Cold War period.  However, this show just seems different.  “Allegiance,” is unique because it brings the protagonists and antagonists under one roof and in one family.

New Kid Ink album lacks any originality

·

King Ink 'Full Speed' Grade: C- Kid Ink’s got the formula figured out, if you’d ask me. On his third album,  Full Speed, the Los Angeles rapper continued his climb up the pop charts.

Comedy Central introduces new late night host

·

'The Nightly Show' Grade: A- It’s not possible to talk about “The Nightly Show” without bringing up “The Colbert Report”. What started as a simple field reporting segment on the comedy news program “The Daily Show” became a cultural phenomenon and one of the most consistently funny shows on television. However, times change and as Stephen Colbert prepares to take over Letterman’s Seat on the “Late Show”, there was a spot to be filled at 11:30 Monday through Thursday on Comedy Central. The successor is Larry Wilmore and the show is “The Nightly Show”. From the first episode, Wilmore has attempted to distance himself from his predecessor and create a new show in the 11:30 slot. Whether it is the placement of the graphics in the bottom left corner or the introduction of a panel, “The Nightly Show” has separated itself from “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report”. The panel is actually one of the most interesting segments of the show.

Spader enthralls audience in return of 'The Blacklist'

·

‘The Blacklist’ Grade: A-   It’s the perfect set-up for TV drama: take an attractive woman and put her in a damsel in distress situation. Couple it with her recurring daddy issues and an emotionally detached father figure and you’ve got the plot for Sunday’s mid-season premiere of The Blacklist. But what should be another crime drama that gets passed over while channel surfing has actually caught the attention of America.

New plotlines await 'Scandal'

·

‘Scandal’ Grade: ABC’s #TGIT was back and better than ever Thursday with the premiere of “Scandal.” After a long winter break filled with anticipation, show creator Shonda Rhimes delivered in the best way possible.  This wasn’t your typical episode where the underlying plot was Olivia Pope fleeting from Jake to Fitz and from Fitz to Jake.  Viewers were left off with Olivia finally choosing between President Fitz and Jake.  Just as she tells Jake she picks herself, she is abducted.  And the viewer is left with so many questions.  Who did it?  Was it her estranged and dangerous father?

NBC series says goodbye

·

‘Parenthood’ Grade:   By the time the opening title sequence began to sing its calming ode to love, tears flooded my eyes.  “May God Bless and Keep You Always.”  Those few poignant words, the lyrics to the theme song and episode title of the series finale, completely sum up what “Parenthood” is all about.  After six beautiful seasons about unconditional love and familial bonds, “Parenthood” has come to a close while the getting was still good.  “Parenthood” never defaulted into the cheesy show about a large family that loves every member.

'A Most Violent Year'

J.C. Chandor builds new crime film era

·

‘A Most Violent Year’ Grade: A   There is a moment during “A Most Violent Year” in which Abel Morales is standing on the edge of a pier with his lawyer discussing the acquisition Abel is working on.

Papa Roach still kicking

·

Papa Roach “F.E.A.R.” Grade: B- Speaking of bands you may have forgotten still existed, Papa Roach released a new album, F.E.A.R., this week, and it’s probably exactly what you’d expect from the nu metal band in their 22nd year together. Papa Roach still feels like a throwback band that makes you smile when it comes on the radio.

FOXCATCHER

Steve Carell stunning as John du Pont

·

"Foxcatcher" Grade: A He’s a far cry from Michael Scott. I speak of Steve Carell, of course, in his transformative role of John du Pont in Bennett Miller’s 2014 awards contender, “Foxcatcher.” Before I get into Carell’s unbelievable performance, allow me to sing my praises for “Foxcatcher” as a whole. Undeniably one of the best films of the season, “Foxcatcher” is the story of a wrestler, Mark Schultz, played by Channing Tatum, and his quest for excellence, a feat he believes he’ll achieve with the coaching of the mentally unstable, richer-than-God heir to the du Pont family fortune, John du Pont. I always say that the hardest thing to get right in a film – more specifically, for the director to get right – is tone.
