Big shoes to fill

One of Kirk Haston's favorite memories as a Hoosier was taking the final three-point shot to defeat then No. 1 Michigan State at Assembly Hall. "I've got kind of a backload of memories that when I think of my career here that kind of go through my mind," Haston said. "It's hard not to look at the Michigan State game as the one that kind of sticks out the most. Just looking back at the tape and looking back at the pictures after the game of the fans' faces and my teammates' faces after that -- that gives me joy that I really can't describe." Throughout the 2000-2001 season, Haston took several shots in similar situations. Some fell -- at Penn State -- and some didn't -- against Iowa in the Big Ten Tournament Championship Game. Now that Haston has decided to forego his final year of eligibility and test NBA waters, who is going to be the go-to guy for the 2001-2002 men's basketball squad?

He is set to make his decision Friday, a decision that will have an affect on his life for years to come. Should he officially announce his entry into the NBA draft and sign with an agent, thus ending his college basketball career, or should he announce that he changed his mind and wants to stick around for one last year? Kirk Haston has a decision that is more difficult than any I have had to make in recent memory.

Final games to decide Stanley Cup

Two teams stand on the brink of greatness and immortality, with only the other in their way. For the Colorado Avalanche, a win tonight and another in Game 7 Saturday night in Colorado, will make them the winners of the Stanley Cup, the championship trophy of the NHL. For the New Jersey Devils, all that remains for them is to win tonight on home ice to be the owners of Lord Stanley\'s Cup for a second straight year.

Hoosiers recognized with top awards

After taking the Big Ten Outdoor Championships two weeks ago, the women's track team captured seven All-American honors at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., with three coming on the final day. It's the most since 1990 and a tie with the most All-Americans IU's women's team has had at an outdoor championships at once. The number brings the total number of women's outdoor All-Americans to 28.

Davis named coach of Big Ten squad

Just a couple months ago, Mike Davis was wondering whether or not he would be the next head coach for IU's men's basketball team. Not only will he be leading the Hoosiers into action next season, he will be the leader for the conference's best as he heads up the Big Ten foreign tours team in August. The trip will feature games in England and Ireland Aug. 8-19.

Penske dominates race

INDIANAPOLIS -- As the remaining laps dwindled, rookie driver Helio Castrovenes threaded his way through traffic and widened his lead at the Indianapolis 500. A wave of relief came over owner Roger Penske, a longtime 500 legend who won for a record 11th time at Indianapolis Motor Speedway Sunday in the 85th running of the "Greatest Spectacle of Racing." After a six-year hiatus, Penske returned in a triumphal fashion. Castrovenes and teammate Gil de Ferran swept the top two positions in Penske's first visit back to Brickyard since 1994.

Supreme Court Decision on Martin issue correct

A ruling came down Wednesday from the Supreme Court that rocked the professional golfing world and got everyone talking again -- and it had nothing to do with Tiger Woods for once. The Court ruled 7-2 that the PGA had to allow for Casey Martin to use a golf cart in tournaments because of his disability, as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The Indianapolis 500 was like "Hee Haw" on crank. It was a frenzied drunken sprint from beer to beer, port-a-potty to port-a-potty, boob show to boob show. The scene was set the Thursday before Memorial Day, when sweaty, red plow pushers began entrenching themselves, their trucks and their light beer in the otherwise modest and pleasant brick and mortar suburb of Speedway, Ind. Then, as the sun set, the flag went up on the drunkest driving spectacle in racing.

Stewart's feats show true heart

Joe Harding was sitting back with a few of his friends, watching the Indianapolis 500 on TV last Sunday like many others across the nation when all of the sudden, Tony Stewart comes walking in the door during the 10 minute delay for rain on lap 155. Even though Harding -- an Indianapolis native -- is a worker at the medical center inside the garage area, right on gasoline alley, he was caught off guard by the surprise appearance. He and his co-workers were not aware of Stewart's need for medical assistance, especially since he was not one of the five cars involved in accidents in the 85th running of the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing."

Early wrecks take out favorites

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis 500 pole-setter Scott Sharp attended the 7:30 a.m. IRL Ministries church service on the first floor of the Worldcom media center on race day. Greg Ray and Sharp were in the congregation when minister Mark Wingler prayed for the safety of the drivers. Sharp and others might be wishing they had also prayed for a warmer race track. Skies were cloudy and the temperature was 56 degrees at the start of the race, a far cry from the mild temperatures of time-trials and qualifications. The temperature change plagued the race's beginning as many big names found themselves eliminated early.

Embrace Lacrosse

Ahh, Memorial Day Weekend, a magnificent sports weekend if ever there was one. With the added bonus of a Monday off in a three-day weekend, sporting events abound. Sure, there are plenty of baseball games to watch, preferably in person, and there are the playoffs in basketball and hockey as both wind down their seasons. There is also some stupid little car race going on in Indianapolis named after our bike race. Well, I'm not really all that excited for that aspect of the weekend. What I'm really looking forward to is the Final Four of college lacrosse. That's right, lacrosse, baby.

Indy 500 is more than it looks

I'll admit it. I'm not your typical race fan. I don't own stock in Old Milwaukee, and I'm horribly inept with a beer bong. I wear Kenneth Cole heels with jeans and I'm more likely to sport a sundress on race day than the requisite airbrushed Earnhardt commemorative tee. But here it is, kids. I am absolutely, positively and inconceivably enamored of racing. I've watched the Brickyard 400, the Daytona 500 and the infamous Indy races since I was old enough to send my tiny Matchbox #3 racecar flying across the living room.

Wisconsin wins again

With only the 4x400m relay left Sunday, sophomore Contrell Ash was tired. He spent most of the weekend winning. Finishing first in the 100, 200 and 4x100-meter relay, Ash and his IU teammates helped the Hoosiers move to a sixth place finish at the Big Ten Championships this weekend at Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex. In their best showing since 1998, the Hoosiers finished with a point total 81.67 -- their highest since 1993. Wisconsin defended their Big Ten title once again with a point total of 135 points.

Hoosiers struggle in weekend activities

This weekend was a losing one for the IU athletic teams as softball and baseball lost their contests while the men's golf team is in last place at the Big Ten Championships in Illinois. Saturday, the baseball team dropped a 10-1 decision to the Buckeyes of Ohio State in the first game of the four-game series, and the softball team lost 3-1 to in-state rivals Purdue at West Lafayette.
