Jefferies named basketball finalists\nIndiana freshman Jared Jeffries was announced as one of the 16 finalists for the 2001 USA Basketball World Championship for Young Men Team by the USA Basketball's 10-member Men's Collegiate Committee Monday.\nThe Big Ten freshman of the year who led all conference freshman in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots, was participating in training sessions June 1-3 at the USA Basketball Men's Trials in Colorado Springs, Colo.\nThe final 12-member USA team will be announced during the team's July 22-26 training camp in Dallas, Texas. The team will compete August 3-12 in Saitama, Japan, in the 2001 FIBA World Championship for Young Men Tournament. The 12 featured teams have been divided into two preliminary round pools consisting of six teams each. The U.S. is in Pool B with Argentina, Croatia, Israel, Japan and South Korea. Pool A includes Australia, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Qatar, Slovenia and Spain. \nThe tournament is held every four years with the United States capturing gold in the inaugural competition in 1993 and finishing fifth in 1997.\nEdwards drafted by Baltimore Orioles\nJunior left-handed pitcher Brad Edwards was selected in the 16th round and the 473rd selection of the 2001 Major League Baseball amateur draft Tuesday afternoon by the Baltimore Orioles.\nEdwards is ninth on the all-time school strikeout list with 192.\nThis is the second year in a row that an IU player has been drafted in the Major League Baseball amateur draft. Zach McClellan was drafted in the fifth round by the Kansas City Royals last year.\nCoach Bob Morgan said he thinks Edwards will sign with the Orioles, because they will help him pay for school and Baltimore will be gaining a quality prospect.\n"He didn't have a good year, and he struggled with his consistency, but he has the capability to perform at the next level," Morgan said.
