Many might say being a biology major is tough work. Put that on top of being a member of the women's cross country team, the indoor/outdoor track team and battling an injury from last season, and more pressure arises. But junior Allyson Hammond seems to pull it all off.

Butler transfer to battle former squad

IU women's soccer coach Joe Kelley calls it the "Kara factor." Butler transfer Kara Bryan, a junior, will be returning to Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis for tonight's game against the Bulldogs. That's one more reason his team has to be prepared mentally for a team known for its physical play. "They have some good players. They're a solid team," Kelley said. "There's no teams on our schedule that we can look at and say 'we're just going to walk all over these people.' Plus the fact that it's an in-state rivalry and obviously the 'Kara factor' will be a big motivating factor for them."

Golfers get dream facility

Rob Ockenfuss walks into a bunker 130 yards away from the green and finds his ball plugged deep in the sand. Certainly it's not a scenario any golfer wants to walk into. Rather than getting flustered, the freshman calmly walks into the bunker and attempts to put the ball on the green.

Hoosiers defeat Kentucky 1-0

After nearly 113 minutes of soccer, and 20 missed shots, the men's soccer team finally had a reason to celebrate during this weekend's final game of the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic.

3 Hoosier runners place in top 13

Friday, the men's cross country team kicked off the season at home with the Indiana Open. Although only five members ran, the Hoosiers placed three athletes in the top 13. Another, senior Josh Trisler, was running well before he chose to withdraw because of problems with his shoe.

Hoosiers establish dominance over satellite campuses

The women's cross country team opened its season Friday with victories against IU-Purdue University at Indianapolis and IU-Purdue University at Fort Wayne. IU-Bloomington dominated the entire race.

Women's team approaches event as chance to learn pacing, coach says

The women's cross country team opens its season today at the Indiana Open at home. The meet will set the tone of the Hoosiers' season. Twelve women will start the race for IU. While head coach Judy Bogenschutz said she considers the meet "low key," she said it's also a good indicator of where the members are in their training. "The first two meets are to see where people are at. They are stepping stone races for the bigger races in Minneapolis and South Bend," Bogenschutz said.

Tournament begins season

The women's volleyball team starts off their season by hosting the Blimpie/Holiday Inn Classic at Assembly Hall this weekend with their season opener 7 p.m. Friday. The Hoosiers continue Saturday with almost back-to-back games starting their first game at noon and their second game of the day at 7 p.m.

Players arrested on charges of ATM theft

Legal troubles continue to plague the football team. Just a month after safety Clarence Young was charged with rape in July, third-string freshman quarterback Patrick Thompson and junior offensive lineman Jamarkus Gorman have been arrested on preliminary charges of theft. Both players were arrested Tuesday morning and posted bail.

Noonan has high hopes

Wednesday night, Pat Noonan was not in the best of moods. The junior is a candidate for the prestigious National Player of the Year award, a result of his work at the forward position for the men's soccer team.

Fisher optimistic about season

Linebacker Smith named to Butkus Award Watch List Bloomington -- Indianapolis Warren Central High School product Justin Smith has been named, along with 10 other Big Ten linebackers, to the Watch List for the Butkus Award. This award, presented annually to the nation's best collegiate linebacker, has a 69-member Watch List.

Assistant coach to be named
