Texas Tech called for cancellation

The decision to cancel the men's basketball game in December of 2002 against former coach Bob Knight and Texas Tech at Assembly Hall was initiated by Texas Tech and was agreed upon by IU administrators, said Jeff Fanter, IU Athletics media relations director. The cancellation was originally announced through a press release Oct. 13.

Facing best of the Midwest

The women's tennis team is competing in the Omni Hotels Regional Championships this weekend at the Neilsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis. The tournament consists of the best players in the Midwest. The singles champion, singles finalist and champion doubles team from each region will earn an automatic berth into the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November.

Team pleased with progress

Heading into its final weekend of regular season play, the field hockey team is concentrating on its own play and improving for the future. The Hoosiers are 1-13 overall and 0-4 in conference play going into the weekend, but Hoosiers said they have come a long way in their second year as a varsity sport.

Team heads to Region IV

The three seniors on the men's tennis team are looking to lead the Hoosiers this weekend at the annual Region IV Championship hosted by Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich. Both singles and doubles matches will be played in single elimination tournaments with no consolation brackets. The Championship consists of the top men's players in the Midwest.

Home court should help start season's second half

Confidence and revenge are on the minds of the women's volleyball team this weekend as they enter the second round of Big Ten play, hosting Iowa and Minnesota. IU has home court advantage after visiting both teams earlier in the month and is looking to continue its newfound winning ways after beating long time rival Purdue last weekend.

Must win for Big Ten berth

The women's soccer team is in the midst of a four-game losing streak, including losing two pivotal games last weekend at home. All the negative feelings from the losses can be erased with a victory at 7 p.m. tonight against Purdue at Bill Armstrong Stadium. A win would give the Hoosiers (6-6-1, 3-5-1) a berth in the Big Ten tournament, which would be a great accomplishment after going 1-8-1 in the conference last season.

Women's basketball team announces season schedule, prices of ticket packages

Game schedules and ticket prices have been announced for the 2001-2002 women's basketball season. Season ticket packages are available for $39 for adults and $13 for youths 18 and under. All season-ticket holders will be admitted free of charge to the Hoosiers' two exhibition games. The first exhibition is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, against the Reebok Lady Stars. The second will be 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, against Premier Sports.

Lone senior looks to lead Hoosiers

Senior Amanda Field is looking to lead the women's tennis team this year after posting a 25-13 (7-3 in Big Ten) record last year. The lone senior has the confidence of team coach Lin Loring, the winningest head coach in collegiate women's tennis history. "Our team captain is Amanda," Loring said. "She's definitely one of our team leaders." Earlier this year, Field competed in the Riviera Women's All-American Championships at the campus of UCLA. She lost her first two matches in qualifying.

Team finishes strong

Men's golf coach Mike Mayer said he had a feeling that a more experienced lineup was what the Hoosiers needed to break through at the 24-team Tillinghast at Quaker Ridge Golf Club in Scarsdale, N.Y. Mayer's hunch paid off as the Hoosiers placed seventh in the 24-team field. "With the lineup that we brought, we got quite a bit out of this tournament," Mayer said. The Hoosiers finished the 36-hole tournament with a total score of 596, putting them 19 strokes behind tournament champion Illinois. IU finished three strokes behind Maryland, the 39th ranked team in the nation, according to Golfweek magazine. The Hoosiers overwhelmed 45th ranked Navy by 22 shots.

Walk-ons provide balance

The women's soccer team has recruited many of the best players in the country. But because the roster has 29 players, and the Hoosiers are only allowed 12 scholarships, most of the team is filled by walk-ons. And coach Joe Kelley has landed three walk-ons who are making an impact on the team. Junior Dana Philp is a back and midfielder. She is one of the team's leaders and a key component to a Hoosier team that has surpassed last year's win total already. Philp has started every game this year, and a total of 40 games in her collegiate career.

Men's club holds strong after losing All-American player

The men's volleyball club looks to make quite a splash this year within both Midwestern and national club sports. The optimism amongst the team is not unfounded. Last year's team took fifth in the nation, while losing only two senior players in the process. While Mike Pingeron, an All-American starter on the team last season is gone, the rest of the team is quite confident with this year's roster.

Masters to teach seminars

Athletes and students at any level can benefit immensely when they are taught by the best, and the IU Jujitsu Club tries to give its members that opportunity. "Twice a year the kids get a chance to learn from a 10th-degree black belt and a ninth-degree black belt," IU Jujitsu Club instructor and second-degree black belt Marc Guyer said. "In December our grand master comes from New York, and we do the same thing in April with our sister club in Notre Dame." Between 40 and 50 students usually attend each seminar to learn from the masters.

Guards battle for right to lead Hoosiers

Tom Coverdale entered last season as IU's point guard as an unknown sophomore. Men's basketball coach Mike Davis revealed Monday that the 2000-2001 season could begin with another inexperienced leader. Freshman Donald Perry, who sat out for much of Monday's workout with a pulled groin, is leading a two-man race to lead IU's offense.

Forward verbally commits to IU

For Daryl Pegram, the combination was just too much to say no to. The lure of both the basketball tradition and the strong academics of IU will make Pegram a Hoosier next season after verbally committing to men's basketball coach Mike Davis late Sunday night. "(IU) offers a great combination of academics and athletics," Pegram said. "It was hard to pass up. I just wanted the best challenge I could find."

Crew teams wrap up a weekend of successful races

The women's rowing Varsity Eight A boat finished in the top 10 at the world renowned Head of Charles in Boston, Saturday. The Hoosiers made an impressive first time appearance in the Regatta.

Women's swim team defeats Evansville to start season

The women's swimming and diving team opened its season in victorious fashion for the third straight year Saturday. For the second consecutive year, the win came at the hands of in-state rival Evansville. The Hoosiers defeated the Purple Aces by a score of 188-103 and won all 14 events in the competition. Coach Dorsey Tierney was pleased with the way her team started off the year, but said the Hoosiers have room for improvement.

Hoosiers continue streak with opening win

The men's swimming and diving team opened its season yesterday at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Cen-ter with a 189-103 win over the University of Evansville Purple Aces. IU, undefeated in season openers in the past four years, got strong contributions from freshman Richard Bryant and junior David Schulze.

Players face diverse field in tournament

The men\'s golf team is in Scarsdale, N.Y. to compete in the 36-hole Tillinghast today and Tuesday. It is the first time the Hoosiers will be playing in the tournament hosted by St. John\'s University.

Women's golf team finishes a familiar fourth in Florida tournament

The Hoosiers entered the Hatter Fall Classic this weekend intent on improving the fourth place finish they had in their first two tournaments. But for the third time in as many tournaments, the Hoosiers finished in fourth place, this time in a tie with North Carolina State. The team finished with a score of 945. Michigan took first place for the third time in all three of IU's tournaments.

Hoosiers fall short in bid for second victory

Heading into it's weekend matches in Iowa City, Iowa, against Iowa and Southwest Missouri State, the IU field hockey team was looking to build on it's momentum from a pair of 3-2 double overtime losses the previous week. But the Hoosiers suffered an emotional blow as they were defeated 8-1 by the Hawkeyes Friday.
