Michigan Big Ten's best

·

Claire Tousley of Zionsville said her mom decided it would be a good idea to take her to the Women's Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships. Tousley, an elementary school student and swimmer, said she likes going fast. Tousley was likely smiling Saturday night, the final night of the three-day event. She did get to see quick swimming -- IU raced to a third-place finish, Penn State jumped to a quick lead but couldn't swim fast enough to hold on for the win and Michigan took the title.

Sitting pretty after day one

·

The first race of the finals in the 2001 Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships might serve as an omen for the Hoosiers. Or at least they hope. The Hoosiers won two events, putting them behind only Michigan after day one of the three-day event at Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center. Penn State sits third.

Hoosiers hope long shot turns into tourney bid

·

After defeating Northwestern Wednesday, interim head coach Mike Davis said the Hoosiers can beat any team in the Big Ten. The rest of the league might have something to say about that. First up for the Hoosiers is conference leader No. 4 Illinois at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Assembly Hall.

Team heads east in second weekend

·

Normally, junior Brooke Monroe and sophomore Stormy Hanson are just your run-of-the-mill energetic athletes. But this week the two have hardly been able to contain their excitement. After weeks of anxiously awaiting the start of the women's softball season, the Hoosiers' scheduled season opener Saturday at Evansville was canceled because of soggy field conditions. The cancellation of the game has made the co-captains that much more ecstatic about starting the season, which they will finally be able to do today against Virginia at the Triangle Classic at North Carolina State.

Team anxious for outdoor action, start of season

·

If IU's baseball players appear anxious, it's probably because they want to go outside and play. Because of poor weather conditions this spring, the Hoosiers have only ventured outdoors to practice twice, coach Bob Morgan said.

Hoosiers prepare for Big Tens with invitational

·

This weekend, the Hoosier Hills Track and Field Invitational offers the women's team opportunities to improve times and marks a week before the Big Ten Championships. Some athletes won't run their main events to avoid injury, while others will aim for personal records.

Hoosiers hunting for boost in standings

·

As the wrestling team's regular season comes to a close, Big Ten teams continue to jockey for position in the standings. The 22nd-ranked Hoosiers have an important weekend coming up with road matches against Big Ten rivals Michigan State and Wisconsin.

Hoosiers dominate Wildcats

·

With 2:02 remaining in the first half of Wednesday night's men's basketball game, Northwestern coach Bill Carmody screamed. Then, he stomped his foot, picked up his cup and plodded to the end of the Wildcat bench.

Men's Basketball: Freshman holds his own off bench

·

As the last man on IU's depth chart, freshman forward Mike Roberts knows he'll only see action in blow-out games. Knowing Northwestern has won one game in the conference in the last two years, he was hoping the regulars would give him a chance to get off the bench and into last night's game.

Jeffries, Haston to stay put

·

Interim head coach Mike Davis said forwards Kirk Haston and Jared Jeffries will not enter the NBA draft following this season. NBA draft expert Chris Monter said it's for the better. "They're not going anywhere," Davis said. "They're both having good seasons and when you have good seasons like they're having, things tend to fly around like that." Jeffries, a freshman, said Sunday after IU's 72-59 victory against Michigan that he was considering a jump to the NBA.

Coach turning team around

·

Dorsey Tierney seems organized. Emphasis on the word "seems." For the most part, the women's swimming coach likely is -- she's rebuilt IU's women's swimming program, radiates a hard-working persona and receives praise from her swimmers. But she's a tad disheveled in a few departments. Take her four gold medals, for instance. Most people would put the death grip on those treasures, place them in an air-tight case and put them on display for every Tom, Dick and Harry who happens to stroll by.
