Tradition, experience key to men's soccer's success

During his career at IU, fifth-year senior back Ryan Hammer has never gone home early for the holidays. While most students are leaving Bloomington to visit family and friends the weekend after final exams, he has always had a bit of unfinished business to take care of.

Former goalie returns to face Hoosiers

IU soccer Coach Jerry Yeagley had a tough decision two years ago. Going into the '99 season, the legendary coach reeled in yet another star-studded recruiting class featuring the likes of current IU standouts junior forward Pat Noonan, and junior midfielders Phil Presser, and Michael Bock. But arguably the most heralded recruit was a goalkeeper out of Palatine, Ill., named Doug Warren.

Freshman swimmer strives for Big Ten success

Football season full of highs and lows for Hoosiers

The IU football team found out yesterday that its season ended as turbulently as it began. Cam Cameron's firing was the final blow for a team that experienced the ultimate highs and the disappointing lows that accompany team sports. But what a crazy four months it was. "There were a lot of ups and downs this season, but it was fun," senior center Craig Osika said. "Fun" isn't exactly the term used looking back to the first game of the season.

Players react to dismissal

Cam Cameron may not have achieved a winning season during his five years as IU's head football coach, but his impact on his players was undeniable Wednesday afternoon. Just hours after IU Athletics Director Michael McNeely announced his decision to let Cameron go, the players met with their former coach for an emotional meeting. "(The meeting) was very silent," senior linebacker Justin Smith said. "Most of the coaches weren't there because they are out recruiting right now. But coach Cameron was very emotional and you could feel the emotion. This program is full of people with character, and we've been through a lot together.

Student athletes giving back

Senior looks to be Big Ten champ

Senior Viktor Sveda came to IU with one goal in mind: to win a National Championship in wrestling. Last season he placed second in the Big Ten. He placed third at the National Championship. This year, he is striving for more.

Hoosier team looks to rebound

Things probably couldn't have gone much worse for the Hoosiers Saturday in their 72-60 loss at Southern Illinois. The 72 points they allowed was a season-high and the 60 points they scored was their second-lowest point total of the season.

Fall season concludes

While eight of IU\'s women's swimmers were competing against some of the world's best in the U.S. Open in New York this past weekend, 15 other swimmers were also competing in the Miami (Ohio) Invitational. Head coach Dorsey Tierney was hoping the competition at the Invitational would allow some of her younger swimmers to gain valuable experience going into the spring championship season and to give them a chance to assume a leadership role on the team.

Brawls, bobbleheads, basketweaving

It's all over. And all I have left is an Antwaan Randle El bobble-head doll. Saturday's 26-15 victory over Kentucky was boring, ordinary and ... boring. As exciting as trying to decide just how much gigantic Wildcat quarterback Jared Lorenzen weighs. Less exciting than discussing bologna sandwiches ... until the final seconds and the tangle of crimson and UK blue that ensued. Some guys threw punches and pushes. Others, like junior Enoch DeMar and freshman Damien Jones, threw helmets.

Men's soccer advances to Elite 8 with win

After edging Michigan State 1-0 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last Sunday, people began to wonder when the Hoosiers would start scoring goals. The only question pondered during IU's sweet 16 meeting with Rutgers was when the Hoosiers would stop. Behind an efficient offense and yet another defensive shutout, the Hoosiers defeated Rutgers 3-0 Sunday, securing another trip to the Elite 8.

Coach said losing season had ups and downs

The season has come to an end for the women's volleyball team, and the Hoosiers finished with an overall 8-20, 5-15 record. Coach Katie Weismiller said the team improved throughout the season and showed it can compete with the other teams in the Big Ten.

Hoosiers post season bests at U.S. Open

The IU women's swimming team got what it wanted out of its three-day trip to East Meadow, N.Y. for the U.S. Open Swimming Championships. Heading into the meet, head coach Dorsey Tierney said she hoped the tough competition present at the meet would help the Hoosiers gear their improvements as they look ahead to the spring championship season.

Final win overflows with emotion

It might not have been the prettiest season, but the Hoosiers managed to turn a 1-5 record around and win four of their final five games, including two against big-time rivals. First came Purdue and the return of the Old Oaken Bucket, and on Saturday the Hoosiers beat Kentucky 26-15 in a emotionally-charged game that erupted on the final snap of the game. With nine seconds left on the clock, senior Antwaan Randle El and his offense, got in the final, "victory" formation. But as soon as the ball was snapped, an IU player and a UK player threw each other on the ground. Both benches emptied onto the field as the clock expired.

Hoosiers place 2nd in U.S. Open

Traditionally, the U.S. Open has been an event where the top talents in the world clash for three days. On Saturday, the Hoosiers showed they belong under that heading, swimming to a second-place finish with 194 points. Junior David Schulze led the Hoosier scoring for much of the event.

Player's mother killed

Senior running back Levron Williams' mother was fatally shot Saturday night in Evansville. Evansville police report getting a 911 phone call just after 10 p.m. CST, and finding the body of Brenda Douglas, 37, at 10:30 p.m. in the driveway of an apartment complex. "Officers were dispatched to the address, and when they pulled into the driveway, it was an obvious gunshot wound," Sgt. Ted Mattingly of the Evansville Police Department said. "The officers called the detectives, (and it became a) crime scene."

Supporting cast steps up for blowout win

IU is more than just seniors Jill Chapman and Heather Cassady. That was apparent Friday night against Illinois State with a 101-53 Hoosier victory. In that game, juniors Jill Hartman and Allison Skapin turned in strong performances off the bench for IU, scoring 18 and 10 points, respectively.

Team wins weekend tournament

The women's basketball team cleared off the awards table Saturday as athletic director Michael McNeely passed out clear trophies to IU players, coaches and managers. The Hoosiers also had wiped away the field in claiming the Holiday Inn/Fazoli's Classic at Assembly Hall after trouncing winless Illinois State and holding off Big Sky opponent Northern Arizona.

Hard-hitting captain taking on new roles

When defenseman Brad Lutsch ended his college hockey career last season, many thought IU's lethal power play would soon follow. As the Hoosiers' all time leader in goals, assists and points, Lutsch was a four-year stalwart on the power play and effectively fulfilled the role of the team's strongest defenseman. But after a rocky start, the Hoosiers are up to their old tricks with the man advantage, most recently displayed last week when they went 3-for-5 against top competition in the Big Ten Classic.

Lady Hoosiers prepare for home tournament

The women's basketball team learned something in its 97-72 win against Butler Wednesday. Winning isn't everything. Although the outcome of the game was never really in question, the Hoosiers dominating the whole way, IU left the locker room in Hinkle Fieldhouse with almost a look of defeat on their faces. Almost. Getting a win under their belts was important for a Hoosier team that has played with No. 7 Stanford and No. 9 North Carolina State. At 2-2, the Hoosiers are now ready to continue to improve and add to their two game win streak.
