Waiting to qualify for the Little 500 is a nerve-wrecking experience for many first-year riders. For some veterans, qualifying is a formality. But during Saturday's qualifying round at Bill Armstrong Stadium, many of the 39 men's teams will feel a little uneasy.

Surprisingly quiet were the freewheeling New York Islanders and Rangers, who decided to build around the youth already in their systems. 2 team members honored as All-Americans

For the first time in five years, IU has produced two All-American wrestlers in the same season. Senior Kevin Stanley and junior Viktor Sveda were the recipients of the honor, having finished sixth and third, respectively, at the 2001 NCAA Wrestling Championship March 15-17 in Iowa City, Iowa.

Practice features changes

Claps and cheers could be heard from the football practice fields north of Memorial Stadium Wednesday afternoon as spring football got under way. For a team that has had a losing record for four consecutive seasons, it was an optimistic bunch that ran drills for three hours.

Davis relieved to stay

Mike Davis was named IU's permanent men's basketball coach in a press conference Wednesday afternoon. But his fate was decided March 19. In a two and a half hour meeting Monday, a seven-member selection committee, led by Vice President for Administration Terry Clapacs, elected to retain Davis and remove the interim tag from his title.

IU ready for Valpo, sweeps Taylor

The baseball team won its fourth consecutive game with a doubleheader sweep of in-state foe Taylor Tuesday. IU (13-7-1) smacked 14 hits on its way to a 12-3 victory in Game 1, then jumped on the Tigers early in Game 2 to win 8-2.

Spring practice begins today

After a disappointing 3-8 season in 2000, the football team looks to begin a rebound today when it starts spring practice at 3:30 p.m.

The women's basketball team was defeated by a big three Saturday in the second round of the Women's National Invitational Tournament.

3 Hoosiers named as All-Americans

Three members of the women's track and field team earned All-American honors at the NCAA indoor championships March 9-10 in Fayetteville, Ark. IU tied for 14th with Southern Methodist and Louisiana State in team standings, the Hoosiers' highest finish in 11 years.
