Seniors' season coming to a close

This Friday the Hoosiers take on Eastern Illinois at home for their final home meet of the year. Sunday, IU will conclude its Big Ten season. For most of the guys, there will be next year, but for senior Brian Smiley and Viktor Sveda, these matches will be the start of the end of their collegiate careers.

Wisconsin escapes with big victory over Hoosiers

IU probably didn't deserve as many chances as it had to win last night against Wisconsin. The Hoosiers probably had their worst defensive performance of the season, and even though they shot the ball well, IU struggled on the offensive end when it counted.

All they want to do is 'Dance'

INDIANAPOLIS -- Two weeks ago, the women's basketball team lurked in eighth place in the Big Ten, not even a glimmer in the NCAA tournament's eye. But Monday night, the Hoosiers (17-13) emerged on Conseco Fieldhouse's victory stand, clad in oversized Big Ten championship T-shirts and flipped-around, black hats. Fifth-seeded IU outlasted second-seeded Penn State (21-11) in the Big Ten tournament final, 75-72.

Hoosiers' stifle defense stops Spartans

INDIANAPOLIS- Tom Izzo said he noticed the difference from the opening tip. Spartan Marcus Taylor said the same thing. And even though Michigan State realized it early, they couldn't do anything about it. The Hoosiers were just more intense than the Spartans Friday afternoon at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. That difference, particularly on defense, led to fourth-seeded IU's 67-56 win against the fifth-seeded Spartans in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament. Sophomore forward Jared Jeffries led the Hoosiers with 14 points while junior guard Tom Coverdale and senior guard Dane Fife each had 11 points.

Hitting the road to Penn State

The last time IU saw Penn State, the Hoosiers didn't do much of anything well. IU shot just 28 percent from the field and hit just one of 14 three-pointers. After finding themselves down by four points at halftime, the Hoosiers managed to stay in the game despite making only five second half field goals.

Davis becomes 1st black coach in IU history

Mike Davis sat in a folding chair Wednesday on the floor of Assembly Hall during his first day as head coach of the men's basketball team. He is the 184th head coach in IU athletics history, and among that group he is unique. It's not that he takes over the school's most visible program. It's not that he wore an "interim" tag before being promoted. It's not that he wears a suit instead of a red sweater. It's race -- the other 183 Hoosier coaches weren't black. Davis is.

The IU women's rowing team opens its spring season in Sacramento, Calif., this weekend. The Sacramento Invitational, played host to by Cal State-Sacramento, involves eight teams, including Cal-Berkeley and Cal-Davis, who made it to the NCAA Championships in 2001.

Selig says no lockout through World Series

NEW YORK -- Baseball commissioner Bud Selig pledged Tuesday not to lock out players through the World Series but left open the chance that owners would impose new work rules during the offseason, a move that could trigger another strike this summer. The players' union, operating without a labor contract since Nov. 7, 2001 quickly interpreted Selig's statement as a veiled threat to impose vast economic changes as soon as the postseason ends.

Awards time

Never mind the ankle injury. That's healing. Now, Mike Davis can finally stop campaigning. It paid off. Jared Jeffries' tender ankle should be sturdy enough for Friday's Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament game against Michigan State, and it should be strong enough for the 2001 Big Ten Freshman of the Year to carry his new hardware. Tuesday -- after a season of boasting from Davis -- Jeffries was named the unanimous choice for the 2002 Big Ten Player of the Year, chosen by both the league coaches and the media. The last Hoosier to unanimously win the honor was Brian Evans in 1996.

Sean May commits to North Carolina

Sean May won't follow in his father's footsteps. Or his brother's. The Bloomington High School North standout forward verbally committed Sunday to play at North Carolina. In doing so, May turned down the chance to play alongside his older brother, Scott May Jr. a freshman walk-on at IU this season, and the opportunity to play at the same school where his father, Scott May, won a national championship and was the college player of the year in 1976. North Athletics Director Ralph Sieboldt confirmed the report Monday and said he didn't expect a press conference.

Recruiting key to Big Ten's ability to compete nationally

Heading into this week's Women's Swimming & Diving NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, there are six Big Ten squads ranked in the College Swim Coaches Association of America Top 25. No. 13 Penn State leads the Big Ten pack, with the five schools ranked between 16 and 22. Only Virginia (14), North Carolina (15), Pacific (19) and Maryland (20) breaks up the run of Big Ten schools in the middle of the rankings. Michigan, Wisconsin and Northwestern are ranked 16-18, while IU is No. 21 and Purdue is No. 22 to round out the ranked Big Ten squads.

Teams open with victory

The men and women's track and field teams both were victorious in their home openers Saturday. The women defeated Central Michigan, Louisville and Marquette, while the men also defeated Marquette and held off a strong Central Michigan team. The rain held off until later in the evening, making it a good opportunity to perform well.

Goalie switches sports, makes mark

When junior goalie Molly Pulkrabek came to IU she expected to be in the net for the Hoosiers. Pulkrabek lettered three times in soccer at Barrington High School in Illinois and came to IU to play for the women's soccer team. She played her freshman year, but in 2000 decided to defend a different net when the field hockey team turned from a club squad to a varsity sport.

Hoosiers bounce back

After a tough loss to nationally ranked Notre Dame Wednesday, the women's tennis team returned to form this weekend at the IU Tennis Center, defeating Big Ten adversaries Minnesota Saturday and Wisconsin Sunday, both by a decisive 6-1 score. IU (13-7, 4-2 Big Ten) wasted no time making a statement against Minnesota (13-4, 2-3 Big Ten). The Hoosiers jumped out to a quick lead by grabbing the doubles point for the sixth consecutive match. In the process, IU's No. 3 doubles team of junior Amanda Field and senior Jennifer Hsia won their sixth consecutive match together.

Huber carries on Billingsley legacy, earns fourth coaching award

The 43-year-old diving team has made a name for itself nationally with numerous victories and a reputation of excellence. And only two coaches have been behind every success. From 1959-1989, coach Hobie Billingsley anchored the IU squad to 15 NCAA Championships and 19 Big Ten Championships. Billingsley also racked up nine U.S. National Diving Coach of the Year awards.
