Haston selected 16th by Charlotte

Nearly a hundred aspiring NBA athletes discovered Wednesday night the direction their lives would take, as all 29 NBA teams made their selections in the 2001 draft in New York City. The lottery picks walked on the stage sporting their new teams' hats and shook the hand of NBA commissioner David Stern, welcoming them into the league. First-team All-Big Ten Kirk Haston was not one of them. Even though Haston didn't get to met Stern, the former IU men's basketball star was selected with the 16th overall pick by the Charlotte Hornets, officially entering into the newest stage of his career: a professional one.

Phi Gamma Delta positioned on pole, ready for race

Row 1 is filled with tradition. Phi Gamma Delta and Delta Chi are two of the all-time top teams. Delta Chi won 7 of 10 races in the 1970s and early 1980s, and Fiji hasn't finished out of the top five since 1993. Sigma Phi Epsilon, the other team in the row, has developed a solid program in recent years and was the last greek team to win the race. Sigma Phi Epsilon edged Fiji to win the 1999 Little 500.

Player able 'to turn it on and off like a switch'

Like a brightly colored flower budding in the spring, 19-year-old freshman Tom Bagnato is blossoming and fitting into the IU men's tennis team (6-6, 0-1 Big Ten). His last victory was a comeback win against Northwestern junior Jackie Jenkins after dropping the first set at the No. 4 position.

Hoosiers to renew rivalry in midweek game

After going 1-3 last weekend against the defending Big Ten regular season champions, the Hoosier baseball team wants to get back to winning before taking its first conference road trip to Ann Arbor to face Michigan this weekend. The team hopes to take that opportunity against Indiana State at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Sembower Field.

Players 'in awe' of new facility

Last Tuesday, the Hoosiers entered their new state-of-the-art practice facility at the IU Foundation for the first time. It remains to be seen how much of an impact the facility will have on the team, but the initial response has been encouraging. "When I walked in, I thought 'Wow,' in astonishment," sophomore Danah Ford said. "They really did a great job on the whole practice field, with the many greens and different shots. We walk into that facility and we get lost and lose track of time."

Hoosiers ready after hiatus

The women's volleyball team is back and ready for action tonight against Indiana State University after a cancelled match and tournament last week. The Hoosiers spent their time relaxing and handling personal affairs, according to sophomore Katie Pollom.

Team Major Taylor not disqualified

Team Major Taylor will not be disqualified from the Little 500, an arbitration panel announced yesterday. It was a reconvening of the arbitration panel that ruled unanimously on April 4 to keep the team in the race after new evidence surfaced from USA Cycling suggesting Team Major Taylor captain Joshua Weir was ineligible under Little 500 rules.

Harsh qualifying conditions no match for Roadrunner team

Saturday morning's cold front made for tough riding conditions in the women's Little 500 qualifications at Bill Armstrong stadium. Some riders described track conditions as the worst they had ever seen. Despite the poor conditions, the Roadrunners, an independent team, took the pole for the 14th running of the women's race with a time of 2 minutes, 52.75 seconds. Last year's pole setters, Delta Zeta qualified second at 2:56.94 and Phi Mu completed the front row at 2:57.37.

Team heading for tundra to take on Alaska-Anchorage

Another day and another road trip to a game away from Assembly Hall. This time, the mens basketball team will be on the other side of the continent, taking on University of Alaska-Anchorage in the opening round of the Great Alaska Shootout 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night in Anchorage, Alaska.

Hoosiers pounce on Wildcats for win

With less than five minutes remaining in Saturday's contest with Northwestern, many of the 26,000 at Memorial Stadium got up from their seats and made their way to the parking lot. With the Hoosier offense compiling 316 rushing yards, 246 passing yards, six touchdowns and a defense that stumped the Northwestern offense four times inside the IU 10 yard line, what else was there to watch?

Hoosiers win quarterfinal game, end Badgers' tourney hopes

CHICAGO -- Bring it on. That was the message interim head coach Mike Davis sent to Illinois after IU beat Wisconsin 64-52 in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament. "I want to play the best team in the tournament," Davis said. "I want to play Illinois, because I feel we're playing the best basketball we've played all season."

Cameron fired

IU football coach Cam Cameron was dismissed from his position as coach this morning, IU athletics director Michael McNeely announced. McNeely said he made his decision in the last 24 hours and met with IU President Myles Brand this morning. He said Brand accepted his recommendation. McNeely said that he then met with Cameron and told him of his decision. He said that the University will name a new coach within a month and that he will head a search-and-screen committee.

Hoosiers slip on national television

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Before the football team headed to Wolfpack territory, coach Cam Cameron and his players promised a "statement" would be made. But before a sold out crowd of 51,500 Thursday at North Carolina State, the statement of an "improved team" was instead replaced by painful plays that bore strong resemblance to last season.

Honegger to be released from jail after 1 month

Former women's basketball player Rachael Honegger has been sitting in a jail cell for the past month. The 23-year-old senior, a former starting forward, will see daylight today. She had been in custody pending a court date on a charge of violating the terms of her house arrest.

All about defense

This game was probably more to the liking of Coach Mike Davis than last Saturday's blowout win against No. 12 Illinois. More defense and less talk about shooting. A smothering defense and a balanced offense led by Jared Jeffries was the story for the Hoosiers as they coasted to a 66-52 win against in-state rival Purdue before 17,456 fans at Assembly Hall. Jeffries finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Tom Coverdale had nine and Kyle Hornsby and A.J. Moye each had six.
