Hoosiers finish in 2nd place at T.I.S. Invitational

The IU volleyball team rebounded after a tough start to the weekend to claim second place in the TIS Bookstore Invitational Saturday by defeating Arkansas State University and perennial NCAA Tournament team University of Dayton at University Gym.

Colts use 'D' to rough up Leftwich, Jags in win

INDIANAPOLIS -- It's not every day the Indianapolis Colts win in a low-scoring dog fight, where they depend on their running game and defense to get the win. Glimpses of the changing times were seen in the Colts home opener, as it was Peyton Manning and the offense on life support while the Colts' defense led the team to a 10-3 victory over Jacksonville Sunday.

Men close strong, finish 6th

Even though par was hard to come by at the Gopher Invitational this past weekend, the IU men's golf team closed strong with a sixth place finish. Only nine of 66 players finished in red numbers Sunday while the rest of the field succumbed to the challenges Spring Hills Golf Course had to offer. None of the Hoosier golfers were able to finish under par to close out the tournament, but freshman Jorge Campillo put forth a strong effort, posting a 1-over-par 73. Campillo finished tied for 14th with a total of 221. Campillo's finish marks his second top 15 finish in only his second start. The Hoosiers, as a team, combined for 902 strokes. The University of Washington finished tied with Minnesota, whose totals were 883 strokes. Niall Turner of Minnesota, who was the only player in the tournament to finish under par with a one-under 71, was the tournament's individual winner.

Running wild

On Aug. 6, IU senior offensive lineman Isaac Sowells did something his head coach didn't appreciate. He guaranteed an IU win over Kentucky. "I told him not to do that again," IU head coach Terry Hoeppner said. "Unless you can back it up." Sowells and the Hoosiers did exactly that Saturday, rushing for more than 300 yards and passing for four touchdowns en route to a blowout win over interstate rival Kentucky, 38-14.

'Smear campaign' will keep Armstrong retired

The nasty tug of war between the bosses of the international cycling union and the World Anti-Doping Agency over who leaked documents to a French newspaper accusing Lance Armstrong of doping claimed its first casualty Thursday: any chance of a comeback by the seven-time Tour de France champion.

Hoosiers host T.I.S. Invitational

The IU women's volleyball team will host the T.I.S. Bookstore Invitational starting today coming off a 2-1 finish at the Winthrop Invitational last weekend. The Hoosiers will face Western Michigan University at 7 p.m. Friday before moving on to play Arkansas State University and the University of Dayton Saturday.

No. 12 Hoosiers set for weekend home matches

As the wins continue to build up for the 4-1 IU field hockey team, so do the accolades. With the release of the first National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll of the 2005 season, the Hoosiers find themselves ranked No. 12, the highest any IU team has been ranked in the history of the program.

Experience building top priority in season opener

For the Hoosiers, this weekend's tournament will bring some much needed experience as they return to Kalamazoo, Mich., for the Western Michigan Invitational. The IU women's tennis team is sending four freshmen amd four returnees into competition to recapture last year's top performance. Head coach Lin Loring sees the next few days as a way to give his newcomers some match-play experience.

Hoosiers hope for 5th consecutive Intercollegiate win

The men's cross country team will officially open its competitive season with the Indiana Intercollegiates held at 3:30 p.m. today at the IU Cross Country course. The meet has traditionally served as IU's first meet of the season, and typically provides low-key preparation for the team's supporting runners.

IU looks to defend title at Intercollegiate meet

The Indiana women's cross country team is loose, but focused. Even one of the Hoosiers' top runners, Kelly Siefker, can take a moment to joke as she describes this year's team. "We are fun, fast girls who look awesome sporting adidas apparel," the senior said.

Coach looks for 'flawless' performance

IU coach Mick Lyon demands perfection. He also wants his team to have a winning record before the Big Ten season starts. Lyon hopes both will happen this weekend as the IU women's soccer team (2-3-1) welcomes Butler and Bowling Green State to Armstrong Stadium. Winning both games will give the Hoosiers a winning record before Big Ten play begins next weekend.

Pitching staff key to Hoosier success

The women's softball team ended last season with a 3-2 loss to rival Purdue. This last game was one of eight Big Ten games the Hoosiers lost by two runs or less. Head coach Stacey Phillips said she believes an improved pitching staff will turn those close losses into wins.

Zayner's return should improve Hoosier defense

The last time junior defender Jed Zayner wore a Hoosier uniform he was celebrating IU's back-to-back national championship last season. After starting every game last season, Zayner has yet to see action four games into the 2005 season. The Hoosiers have gone 3-0-1 in their stint without their defender, who has to sit out to keep his NCAA eligibility after trying out for professional teams in France.

Plugging up the holes on defense

The IU defense surrendered 415 rushing yards in last Saturday's 35-31 win over Nicholls State University. A year ago, the Hoosier defense gave up 51 points to Kentucky in the team's first loss of the season. But as senior defensive back Will Lumpkin said during Monday's press conference, it's a new week and a new year.

Team throws down competition, brews

After trying its hardest to crush the opponents on the field, there's nothing the IU women's rugby team loves to do more than down a few beers with them off the field. Every home game and most away games for the IU Red Storm is followed with an interteam social where the two teams chat about rugby, sing rugby songs and drink. This weekend, the Red Storm will compete at Irish Fest, a rugby tournament that coincides with the Irish Festival in Indianapolis.

Improving mind, body with martial arts

For thousands of years, many Chinese people have practiced the martial art Tai Chi Chuan to promote health and use as a self-defense technique. Approximately 50 years ago, it was first taught in the United States. Now, students of all ages and physical abilities are practicing Tai Chi Chuan to improve their bodies and minds.

'Crimson Crew' flag stolen Saturday

Amid the chaos and celebration of the Hoosiers' home opener Saturday, the "Crimson Crew" flag, carried onto the field by IU's senior captains, was stolen during the game. Student Athletic Board President Elizabeth Roush said the SAB and IU head coach Terry Hoeppner had intended for the flag to be taken out on the field by the senior captains and then be passed into the student section at Memorial Stadium.
