Hoosiers set for battle with South Dakota State

·

When the IU women’s basketball team enters South Dakota State’s Frost Arena tonight, a different type of crowd awaits them. Nearly one-third the population of Brookings, S.D. will be in attendance when the Hoosiers (19-13) play in front of a sold-out crowd of 6,000 in the quarterfinal of the WNIT. On Monday, the Hoosiers advanced out of the second round of the tournament with a last minute 74-71 win against Iona. Tonight they will take on South Dakota State (24-5) for the first time in IU history, competing against a team that has won its last 13 games.

Spring practice begins without Hoeppner

·

It may have been the last day of winter, but for the IU football team Tuesday marked the first day of spring practices. “It’s nice, it’s a beautiful day out here,” junior fullback Josiah Sears said. “It was really fun to play football again, since it’s been a while.” It had been exactly 122 days since the Hoosiers’ 2006 campaign ended with a 28-19 loss to Purdue on Nov. 18, 2006. That loss left IU one game short of its first bowl appearance since 1993 with a 5-7 record.

·

HAMPTON, Ga. – Jimmie Johnson already has his eye on the big prize. The reigning NASCAR Nextel Cup champion passed Tony Stewart three laps from the end Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway and went on to win his second straight race. “We’re thinking championship already,” said Johnson, only four races into the 36-race season. “That’s really the mode anymore. You have to think about points and being in the top 12 all the time.” Johnson had the car to beat Sunday, leading 132 of the first 238 laps. But the only laps he led the rest of the way in the 325-lap event on Atlanta’s 1.5-mile oval were the last three.
