Delta Gamma won the 25th running of the women's Little 500 Friday.
Delta Tau Delta won its first-ever Little 500 Saturday.
Delta Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, Teter, Wing It, Kappa Kappa Gamma and Delta Sigma Pi had been battling back and forth all night with no team taking a commanding lead. As the 100th and final lap began, the six teams found themselves in an all-out, one-lap sprint to decide the winner of the 25th women’s Little 500 at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
Six years ago, Delta Tau Delta finished the Little 500 in 31st place after qualifying in 33rd. After Saturday’s race, Delt is on top of the world.
As the sun set Friday on a gloomy evening and most corners of Bloomington turned their attention to the animated festivities surrounding Little 500, one enclave of Hoosiers joined the rest of the student body in celebration — but its elation was of a different nature.
Jim Kirkham coached riders back from crashes before. He’s coached the Cutters to wins the past five years straight.
In the first home meet for the IU track and field squads, the Hoosiers posted a number of top finishes.
After falling behind 2-0 early in the second half against Notre Dame on Saturday night at Parkview Field in Fort Wayne, the IU men’s soccer team fought back to win 5-4 in overtime after a second half full of goals.
A five-run seventh inning for Georgia Southern broke a 1-1 tie, and the Eagles won 9-1 to avoid a series sweep at the hands of the Hoosiers Sunday at Sembower Field.
Led by a breakaway effort from RJ Stuart, Delta Tau Delta won its first-ever Little 500 in front of a packed Bill Armstrong Stadium, ending the Cutters’ five-year winning streak.

The weather forecast for Saturday predicts rain, which would create adverse conditions for the riders. Junior Tyler Dennis of the Black Key Bulls, another top team that placed third in Qualifications, isn’t worried about the rain.“It rains on everybody,” he said. “I don’t think it will affect (the race) at all. I think the top teams will stay the top teams, and everybody else will fall in line. Maybe mental toughness will be more of a factor.”If the Cutters do, indeed, extend their record to six in a row, they will have to overcome more than just the weather. This year, the team is without Eric Young, who landed the best ITT time from 2009-11 and won the USA Cycling Professional Criterium National Championship just four months after his final Little 500 appearance.
Thirty-three women’s teams will take the track at Bill Armstrong Stadium tonight for the 25th running of the Little 500. On race day, two-time defending champion Teter will aim for its third straight Little 500 title and will be wearing the coveted yellow jersey on the track.
The IU men’s and women’s track and field squads will be back at it again this weekend, as the Hoosiers will compete at home at the Polytan Invitational at Billy Hayes Track in Bloomington. However, four Hoosiers from the men’s squad will be traveling to Princeton, N.J. to compete in the Larry Ellis Invitational as a distance medley relay group.
Seniors Stephen Vogl, Jeremy Langer and Will Kendall said they hope to conjure up a repeat of last year’s scenes of Hoosier joy at a 3 p.m. Friday Senior Day rematch with No. 20 Illinois at the Varsity Tennis Courts.
Sunday will be Senior Day for IU, and the Hoosiers will play one of the Big Ten’s toughest teams in Northwestern.
This weekend’s Big Ten home stand against Northwestern marks the last time the IU softball team will play in front of students before summer break this year.
After beginning its spring slate of games with a 2-1-1 record, the IU men’s soccer team will take on its second in-state opponent of the season Saturday when the Hoosiers travel to Fort Wayne to take part in the National Soccer Festival.
At both the NYX Hoosier Invitational and the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate, the squad placed third among 15 teams. The Hoosiers will look to take their first title of the spring season Saturday and Sunday at the Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette.
The Hoosiers said this is a perfect time for them to face a nonconference opponent, as Georgia Southern University comes to Sembower Field this weekend.
