Flag football brings thrill to teams

There are not 40 thousand spectators in the stands, but close friends and fraternity brothers crowd the near sideline. There isn't inches of rain on the field because these games are played indoors. There is no local television coverage, but friends of the players can be seen taping with their home video cameras.

IU beats Division I Penn State

Saturday night the Hoosiers (8-3-1,2-1-1) began what they hope will be a new Thanksgiving tradition by winning the first ever Big Ten Thanksgiving Classic Championship. IU upset American Collegiate Hockey Association Division I leader Penn State 6-4 en route to a Great Midwestern Hockey League showdown against Michigan State for the title.

Penalty kick payoff

The men's soccer team advanced to the third round of the NCAA tournament Sunday afternoon, defeating their conference foe, the Michigan State Spartans, 1-0 at Bill Armstrong Stadium. It was the No.4 Hoosiers third meeting, as well as third shutout, against the Spartans this year. The teams last met in the Big Ten Championship game at the University of Wisconsin Nov. 11. In 27 meetings against Michigan State IU is undefeated, outscoring the Spartans 101-6.

Junior Chad Andrews placed 89th out of 244 in his second national cross country championships. The event was held at Furman University on the Paladins' golf course. Andrews said his goal was to finish in the top 45, but fell about 30 seconds short.

How to fix baseball in a few easy steps

Much of the talk since the greatest World Series in recent memory concerning baseball has been about contraction. Is it a viable solution? Does it actually solve any of baseball's problems? Can the league actually do something like this? Well, while these are all good questions that should be answered, I think Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig is on the right track towards solving baseball's problems with his suggestion. Yet, he's not going far enough.

Team effort brings Monon Spike home

It was a team effort for the volleyball team to win back the Monon Spike on their home court in the University Gymnasium in front of a crowd of 1,010. It took four games for the Hoosiers to defeat the Purdue Boilermakers 30-22, 30-25, 27-30 and 30-24.

Women dominant in defense of title; relays and team depth lead to championship

Going into the Indiana Invitational, the IU women\'s swimming team looked to defend its title as invitational champions and to use the championship format to help them prepare for the Big Ten and NCAA Championships. After the three-day competition, sophomore Sarah Fiden said she thought the Hoosiers were able to learn from the meet format and said the invitational is just another event as the team gears for the spring championship events.

Hoosiers dominate in Indiana Invite

Sunday, the third and final day of finals for the Indiana Invitational at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center, the Hoosiers had yet to place first in a single event. That changed in the second to last race, as freshman Murph Halasz posted a 1:49.78 time in the 200-yard butterfly to win the event. "I did pretty good," Halasz said. "I was definitely hurting for the last 75, but it's the 200-fly, you're supposed to hurt."

Runner to compete in NCAA tourney

The NCAA Cross Country Championships are being held today in Greenville, S.C., at the Furman University golf course. The race features the top 31 teams in the nation. It also features the top four individuals, whose teams did not qualify for the championship from each regional and two at large individual bids. This all adds up to a total of 255 runners. One is junior Chad Andrews. Andrews was one of the top four individuals in the Great Lakes Regional. Andrews finished 12th overall last weekend and was the only Hoosier to qualify for the championship.

Team one down on Lions

STATE COLLEGE, Penn. -- Cam Cameron's motto -- score one more or hold them to one less -- works well when IU scores one more. The Hoosiers average just less than 30 points a game. But IU needed to hold Penn State to one less Saturday, and the Hoosier defense that made big plays in back-to-back victories heading into this weekend looked more like the one that ranks next-to-last in the Big Ten in points allowed. The Nittany Lions converted 9-of-13 third downs, and three players set career highs in a 28-14 Penn State victory that deflated IU's bowl hopes. The Hoosiers are 3-6 with two games remaining.

Hoosiers eliminated from bowl race

STATE COLLEGE, Penn. -- Penn State was up two touchdowns with just more than nine minutes left in the game, and the football team was at its three-yard line. Enough time remained on the clock to even the score, but it was crucial that the Hoosiers score on this drive. All senior running back Levron Williams had to do was follow the play and walk into the end zone. He did what was expected, but as the Hoosiers were celebrating, an official threw a flag. Holding, IU, on senior fullback Jeremi Johnson. No touchdown, no final momentum drive. And the Hoosiers lost 28-14, with IU's post-season dreams dashed after a dreary, mistake-filled game that was topped off with the controversial holding call.

Battle for the Monon Spike

Tonight is an important and emotional night for the Hoosiers, as the women's volleyball team takes on the Purdue Boilermakers at 7 p.m. in the annual match for the Monon Spike. It will also be the last time seniors Laurie Gardner, Crecia Keithley and Meghan Stout play on their home court at the University Gymnasium.

Season opener offers Hoosiers a tough test

Hoosiers hit the road in weekend series

The IU hockey team will hit the road this weekend for their second weekend series of Great Midwest Hockey League conference play. Tonight the Hoosiers are in Rochester, Mich. for a game against Oakland University. They will then head south to Ann Arbor for a Saturday night showdown against the University of Michigan. The 6-2 Hoosiers are coming off a big weekend where they beat both GMHL opponents Ferris State and Michigan State.

Hoosiers begin season on road

The wrestling team opens its season Sunday in Columbia, Mo., for the Missouri Open. More than 20 teams and 400 individuals were involved in the meet last year. Many of the individuals in this year's open are ranked nationally.
