Hoosiers miss dance for first time since '85

INDIANAPOLIS -- During IU's two games in the Big Ten Tournament March 11 and 12, two new heroes emerged for IU. Former walk-ons turned offensive sparks junior guards Ryan Tapak and Mark Johnson led the Hoosiers. Coming off the bench, Tapak had six points and 11 assists while Johnson chipped in with a career-high 13 points in a first round win over Ohio State.

Hoosiers finish 12th at NCAA's

IU Women's Swimming and Diving has finished in the top 16 at the NCAA National Championships the past four years, and this year's competition held to that tradition as the Hoosiers finished 12th at the meet in College Station, Texas.

Hoosiers capture Shootout title

The IU women's golf team headed to Boerne, Texas, during spring break to compete in the Tapatio Springs Shootout, hosted by Baylor University. The 19-team field included four teams in the Golfweek Top 50, including the No. 46 Hoosiers.

Baseball's spring break ends over .500 The IU baseball team went 4-2 on its spring break trip to improve its record to 11-7 on the season. During this six-game road stretch in Bradenton, Fla. the Hoosiers recorded victories over Duquesne, Columbia, Vermont and Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Indiana, Ball State to begin 3-game series MUNCIE -- IU and Ball State have agreed in principle to a three-game series that will bring the Hoosiers to Muncie for only the fourth time since the schools first played in the 1934-35 season.

Tradition long gone

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana high school basketball traded tradition for trophies in 1998 when it scrapped the tournament format that produced the most famous shot in Hoosier hoops history. Now, 50 years after Bobby Plump's last-second basket lifted tiny Milan over big-school Muncie Central, the tournament is split into four separate classes. There's almost no chance the state ever will go back to the open-class tourney.

Many highs, many lows

INDIANAPOLIS -- It was March 12, a Friday which many IU students will remember for sandy beaches and drinks with little umbrellas in them. But IU's two senior players, center George Leach and forward A.J. Moye, will look back and see defeat in a game that squashed their tournament dreams. Illinois 71. Indiana 59. Even a comeback after a 13-point deficit couldn't help the Hoosiers. 'There's always next year,' people will say.

IU loses to Illinois, will not make NCAA or NIT

The Hoosiers (14-15) dropped their ninth game in the past 12 Friday in a loss to Illinois 71-59 and posted their first losing season since 1969-70, when they went 7-17. They will not make a postseason tournament for the first time since the 1976-77 season. Mark Johnson led Indiana with 16 points --his second straight career high. A.J. Moye added 13 points and nine rebounds in his final college game, and the Hoosiers shot just 34.5 percent from the field.

Hoosiers stay alive

INDIANAPOLIS --With 8:15 to go in the second half and IU and Ohio State tied at 58, the Hoosiers took the lead with the unlikeliest of candidates. Junior Mark Johnson, a former walk-on, hit a three-pointer and helped lead the Hoosiers (14-14) to an 83-69 win over Ohio State (14-16) in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament. "I'm just playing within the offense and seeing what happens," Johnson said. "I didn't realize what the score was. I got the pass. I was open, and I stroked it. It took a lot of pressure off of me and made me feel more comfortable out there."

Hoosiers hope to add Fagan to NCAA roster

Junior Ryan Fagan will try to become the fifth Hoosier on the men's swimming and diving team to qualify for this year's NCAA Championships when he takes to the board in this weekend's NCAA Zone C Diving Championships in Bloomington.

Towns competes in NCAA meet

During the course of the 2004 indoor track season, IU junior sprinter Ara Towns' frequent flyer miles increased. Earlier in the season, she traveled to New York City, and now, for the second time this season, she'll be headed to Fayetteville, Ark. This trip will be the biggest yet, as she competes in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Wiley in with Cowboys, Lynch out with Bucs Defensive end Marcellus Wiley is now a Cowboy. John Lynch is soon to be an ex-Buccaneer. A week after being released by San Diego, Wiley signed with Dallas Thursday in hopes of living up to his reputation as one of the league's more feared pass rushers. He got $16 million over four years, including a $4.5 million signing bonus.

Big Ten Tourney starts for IU

A new season will begin today. All of those two-point home losses are gone. The Hoosiers (13-14, 7-9 Big Ten) have a chance to forget all of that and make a run to a postseason berth. Eighth seed IU starts the Big Ten Tournament at noon Thursday against ninth seed Ohio State (14-15, 6-10) at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The Hoosiers need to win the Big Ten Tournament if they hope to reach the NCAA Tournament. They need at least two wins to guarantee a National Invitational Tournament bid. "We believe we can win," sophomore guard Marshall Strickland said. "We just need to go out there and play as hard as we can and play like it could be our last game, every game."

Journey begins for Cooper

As postseason tournaments get under way, some teams and players will not qualify for the next level of competition. The long hours put into practicing, weight lifting and going that extra mile eventually have to end. But for senior Coyte Cooper, the journey to become a wrestling national champion in his last attempt has only just begun.

Wright named second team Big Ten

Three members of the men's basketball team received All-Big Ten awards Tuesday. Sophomore guard Bracey Wright was named to the second team by both the coaches and the media. He was third in the league in scoring at 18.7 points per game. He needs just 10 points to join the 1,000-point club at IU. Senior forward A.J. Moye was named an honorable mention by the media. The 6-foot-3 Moye led the Hoosiers in rebounding at 6.2 per game, eighth in the league.

E-Z Money beats Acacia 'A' for Div. I title

After almost seven weeks of group- and single-elimination, winner-take-all tournament play, the 2004 intramural basketball season has finally crowned its champions. Independent team E-Z Money and fraternity team Acacia 'A' squared off in the men's Division I championship game Sunday at Assembly Hall.

SRSC patrons pumped by tunes

Junior Jonathan Garber works out three days a week at the Student Recreational Sports Center. His workout routine consists of cardiovascular exercise and strength training. But what he likes most is the background music playing while he works out in the weight room. The different genres parallel his workout.
