Hoosiers look to speedy defense to improve play

The numbers don't lie. In eight Big Ten games last year, the IU football team gave up an average of 38 points and 442 yards per game. The Hoosiers' 1-7 record in the Big Ten in 2005 backs up the statistics. But the 2006 defense is trying to put the miserable 2005 Big Ten season behind it.

Sister Act: O'Connells work to help Hoosiers

"Oh! Meg's out! Someone get her out!" junior Kate O'Connell yelled from a stationary bike on the sideline of Mellencamp Pavilion. This comment came after Meg was struck in the leg with a ball on a practice penalty corner. Is that Kate being a concerned teammate? Nope. Try a fun-poking sister. After joking around and screaming loud enough for everyone in the pavilion to hear her call her sister out, Kate's sister-side came out when freshman Meg O'Connell returned to the sideline. "You OK, Meg?"

Transformation of field hockey captains mirrors team's growth

IU is Big Ten favorite

The IU men's soccer team is the favorite to win the Big Ten conference title, according to the league's coaches. The Hoosiers edged out defending champion Penn State for the top spot with Ohio State finishing third in the voting. Wisconsin, Michigan State, Michigan and Northwestern round out the rest of the conference.

Brother of Colts' Wayne killed Sunday

KENNER, La. -- The brother of Indianapolis Colts receiver Reggie Wayne was killed Sunday when the delivery truck he was driving crashed into a highway guardrail. Rashad Wayne was pronounced dead at the scene, said James Gallagher, a spokesman for the Kenner Police Department.

No. 14 Hoosiers extend winning streak to 9 games

Coming from behind in two games this weekend, the No. 14 Hoosiers extended their winning streak to nine games, the second longest in team history. IU (9-1) needed double overtime Friday to win its Big Ten season opener 5-4 versus the Northwestern Wildcats.

Doom in the gloom

The game began as the rain continued. Sloppy weather conditions were exceeded only by sloppier football play as the Hoosiers played their final nonconference game against the University of Connecticut Saturday. Soon it grew clear as the skies grew cloudy that this would not be a high-scoring game. Things seemed set for doom in the gloom.
