Signs of change

·

About 80 Little 500 riders spoke in unanimous opposition to an IU Student Foundation initiative that would prohibit nonstudent coaches from being in the pits on race day. Almost 60 riders attended a meeting Wednesday and about 20 attended a meeting Thursday to address the IUSF "Student Coaching Initiative." The rider's forums were hosted by alumni coaches -- individuals coaching Little 500 teams who are not undergraduate Bloomington students. The IUSF initiative only permits undergraduate Bloomington campus students to coach in the pits on race day. The new rule takes effect for the race this spring.

Fittingly, Dumars slips into Hall of Fame

·

DETROIT - Joe Dumars is going into the Basketball Hall of Fame just as he played -- under the radar. Making all the noise, drawing all the attention Friday night will be two other inductees -- Charles Barkley and Dominique Wilkins. Barkley, no doubt, will have the most entertaining speech. Wilkins will monopolize the highlight tapes.

Davydenko makes Open semifinals

·

NEW YORK -- He plays more tennis than anyone around, so a five-set test of wills lasting more than 3 1/2 hours seemed a fitting way for Nikolay Davydenko to work his way into the U.S. Open semifinals. Maybe now he'll get some more attention.

The IU women's soccer team will take on two teams at Bill Armstrong Stadium in this weekend's Old National Bank Hoosier Classic -- one that IU coach Mick Lyon is well acquainted with, the other whose coach knows IU very well. The Hoosiers (1-2-1) kick off their weekend at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Northern Arizona University in a game that will be a homecoming for Lumberjacks coach Andre Luciano.

Though it's only September, Saturday's Indiana Open has all the makings of a preview to the Big Ten Championships for the IU women's cross country team. After letting two wins slip away last weekend, Freitag and the gang are picking up the pieces.

·

Watching the game tape from Sunday's overtime loss to in-state rival Notre Dame, IU men's soccer coach Mike Freitag noticed a couple things about his team's play. First, the Hoosiers had a hard time stopping Notre Dame forward Joe Lapira. Second, his boys were tired. "We had some heavy-legged backs, some tired backs that came against the Tasmanian devil (Lapira)," Freitag said.

Grossman: Time to establish myself

·

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Rex Grossman's two previous treks to Lambeau Field have been successful. He's 2-0 on the home turf of the Green Bay Packers, which is not bad considering he's made only seven regular-season starts in his career.
