End of the road

On a night that united two of college basketball’s historically dominant programs, the IU men’s basketball team made history of its own, but of a dubious kind . In a first half in which they had more fouls than converted field goals, the Hoosiers scored just 13 points, the fewest in any NCAA tournament game in the post-shot clock era.

UPDATE 10:33 p.m.: Hoeppner skipping spring practice for health reasons

INDIANAPOLIS – IU coach Terry Hoeppner, who has had brain surgery twice in the last 15 months, will skip spring practice for health reasons. Athletic director Rick Greenspan said in a statement Sunday night Hoeppner had indicated a desire to regain his strength and energy after a rigorous recruiting campaign. Assistant head coach Bill Lynch will be in a charge of the team when it begins practice on Tuesday.

UPDATE: A gutsy goodbye

The IU players didn’t have to say a word following their game Saturday night; their faces said it all. Senior Rod Wilmont sat slumped down in a chair, tears welling up in his eyes. Junior Lance Stemler paced along the back of the locker room, his eyes swollen and red from crying. And not a single word was spoken among the players. The message, though, was clear – the Hoosiers’ season was over.

UPDATE: Hoosiers make most of second chance

Last time around, IU and Gonzaga battled it out in a high-scoring game in which the Bulldogs dominated the paint. Six Gonzaga players scored in double-figures en route to a 90-80 victory against the Hoosiers in the second round of the 2006 NCAA tournament. Fortunately for IU, this time around was nothing like the last.

With the Big Ten tournament here, IU coach Kelvin Sampson knows that winning is mostly between the players’ ears. Now his players have to go out and execute.

Mental game

IU coach Kelvin Sampson is likely to forgo filling out an NCAA tournament bracket this season. After all, with his Hoosiers set to receive a bid to the tourney, picking his own regional could get a bit awkward.

Hoosiers drop 2 games

The IU softball team said they were in search of consistency before making the trip to Clearwater, Fla., to compete in the Adidas Invitational. But that wasn’t what the Hoosiers got in their two games Thursday against No. 19 Georgia Tech and Massachusetts.

Man sues Pacers mascot, alleging on-court tackle

INDIANAPOLIS – A man is suing the Indiana Pacers and the performer who portrays its feline mascot, alleging that the 6-foot-tall performer tackled him during a free-throw-shooting contest, leaving him with permanent injuries.

IU heads south for spring break tourney

The IU men’s tennis team (8-4) was in for a treat Wednesday. As they stepped onto the Varsity Courts, the sun was shining with the temperatures in the mid-40s. Junior Mike McCarthy said it was the team’s second day outside, and while the weather was pleasant in Bloomington, they have four spring break matches to play in the warm weather of Clemson, S.C.

Hoosiers go west for 2 matches against top-ranked foes

With spring break just around the corner, several IU students have plans of traveling to places far warmer than Bloomington, getting into their swimsuits and relaxing at the beach. The women’s water polo team is no different, as they head to California to take on two of the nation’s toughest teams in No. 9 San Jose State on Saturday and No. 7 California at Davis on Sunday.

Committee has tough decisions at top of bracket, too

INDIANAPOLIS – Gary Walters understands the difficulty in filling those final spots for the NCAA field. This year, however, his selection committee faces a new twist – picking the top seeds. With Florida’s late-season struggles, Wisconsin’s injuries and Kansas’ power ranking, Walters acknowledged Wednesday that putting together the 65-team field this weekend will be far from clear-cut.

IU hopes to crack top 10 at NCAA championships

The IU women’s swimming and diving team has bested every challenge placed before it this year, completing an undefeated dual-meet season and claiming its first Big Ten championship since 2003.

Hoosiers compete at Adidas Invitational

Less than a week after having its games against Ohio and Southern Illinois canceled because of the threat of extreme cold weather in Carbondale, Ill., the IU softball team will get to compete in the sun when they travel to Clearwater, Fla., for the Adidas Invitational today.
