Women are pigs: Pageant proves it

Several nights ago I was forced to sit through a TV tragedy, also known as the "First Annual Sexiest Bachelor in America Pageant." By forced, I mean that my female roommate, who we will call Gertrude, had control of the remote and had hidden it somewhere in Russia I believe. I was not feeling particularly motivated and therefore decided to endure this trash rather than lift my bum off the sofa. After watching this debacle, I came to this conclusion: Women are pigs too.

Multi-talented football player finds home on offense, defense

Under position, sophomore Kris Dielman is listed as a defensive tackle. In the picture alongside his career statistics, Dielman is hauling in a reception as a tight end. Such is the life of Dielman, who plays both defensive tackle and tight end for IU. He is getting the job done on both sides of the football.

Apartments not for undergrads

It's Friday night and some 6-year-olds are discussing their plans for the weekend. One says hopscotch. Another looks forward to some jump rope. The third plans to download Disney movies off the Internet with the help of her beer-drinking college friends.

Soccer players up for top award

College soccer coaches and media members decided before this season that IU's Ryan Mack and T.J. Hannig were among the best players in the nation, when both players were named finalists for the Hermann Trophy, an award given to the nation's top player.

Underclassmen fill big shoes

Coach Joe Kelley has had to go to his bench more times than expected this season. The Hoosiers have been plagued with injuries, as five or more starters sat the bench at one time this season. Because those experienced starters are injured, Kelley has had to look toward his younger, less experienced players to pick up the slack. Of the four who have stepped in this season, only one is a regular starter, with the second most experience being 10 games played in the 1999 season.

2 home losses leave Hoosiers in Big Ten volleyball quicksand

The Hoosiers were supposed to ruffle the Hawkeyes' feathers then give sixth-ranked Minnesota a run for its money last weekend. Iowa and Minnesota didn't agree.

Tennis players go solo

As the individual season rolls along, the men's tennis team will send players to two tournaments this weekend. Three players will go to Stone Mountain, Ga., for the pre-qualifying round of the All-American tournament. Others will go to Louisville, Ky., for the Louisville Invitational. Senior Paul Jacobson, junior Rahman Smiley and freshman Bernard Tsepelman will compete in Stone Mountain in a tournament with all the best players in college tennis. The event will be unique, in that it will be crowded and individualized.

Controversial abortion drug coming to Bloomington

Planned Parenthood in Bloomington will be one of the first Planned Parenthood clinics in Indiana to carry RU-486, or mifepristone, the new abortion pill recently approved by the FDA. Sylvia Johnson, media coordinator for Planned Parenthood of Greater Indiana, said Planned Parenthood is not sure the exact date when the drug will become available, but that it will offer mifepristone as soon as it is on the market.

Job fair draws hundreds

Dozens of companies ranging from Caterpillar to Charles Schwab to the Central Intelligence Agency flocked to Alumni Hall Tuesday as part of the annual Information Technology Career Fair. Sponsored by the Arts and Sciences Placement Office, this year's fair was the largest ever, with 61 companies.

Religious policy aims for fairness

Last year IU adopted a new policy to handle student complaints of religious discrimination. This new policy, backed by federal law, states "that instructors must reasonably accommodate students who want to observe their religious holidays at times when academic requirements conflict with those observances."

College Republicans promote student involvement

Olympics committee cracks down on athlete drug use

The Olympics ended Sunday, but for some athletes, it ended on a note of humiliation and disappointment. Eight athletes tested positive for drug use in the Sydney Games, and 50 tested positive for drug use before the games. It's part of an Olympic crackdown on doping athletes.

Ballet season to get under way

Drama, a bit of flesh sells

The year's reality-show craze finally concluded as CBS' "Big Brother" concluded last week. The show was obviously no match to the ratings of "Survivor" and the critical acclaim of "The 1900 House" and "American High." On the other hand, it never sunk to the depth of "Making the Band," "The Real World" and "Road Rules." If ABC renewed "Making the Band" for a second season, you knew that "Big Brother" wasn't doing badly after all. In fact, its season finale managed to beat the ratings of the Olympics telecast.

It'll never happen to me
