Consumerism sustains life

·

I suppose third time is a charm. I have read the past two columns that Duncan Teater has submitted for publishing in your newspaper. I managed to scribble down a few things in response to each of his columns, but didn't get around to submitting them. This past column broke me.

Stop buying New Era

·

As a recent alumnus of IU-Bloomington and a founding member of No Sweat! at IU, I was disappointed by Dean of Students Richard McKaig's statement last week regarding the strike at the New Era plant where IU hats are made.

Misplacing blame

·

There is no hope of engaging in a civil discussion between the "Blame America" crowd and the "America United" crowd, I have decided. These two schools of thought are, after all, diametrically opposed. While the latter embraces American culture, the former embraces American counter-culture.

Internal attacks are the hardest battles

·

James Bourke's letter to the editor Oct. 18 is interesting and a useful rebuttal to critics of U.S. military action abroad. But Mr. Bourke fails to note that the United States is already mobilizing and leading worldwide law enforcement agencies to apprehend the Sept. 11 terrorists.

Prevalent topics offer deeper discussion than toiletry

·

I am writing in response to the editorial about the problem with toilet papering in the greek system ("Balancing tradition and courtesy," Oct. 17). The fact that I was reading about the effect of a common bathroom amenity on the beauty of our campus and its effect on the environment seemed completely ridiculous.

Toilet papering no more wasteful than copies of 'IDS'

·

I am writing in response to the Oct. 17 staff editorial "Balancing tradition and courtesy." I am amazed that during a time when we are enduring a war on terrorism, an unstable economy and anthrax scares that the IDS staff unanimously felt greeks toilet papering each others' chapters was timely or relevant. Even on a "slow news day," I would have a hard time believing that even the IDS staff would be incapable of addressing more pressing issues.

Healthy debate of ideas essential

·

For months, I have read on the pages of the IDS and heard privately from friends about the danger that the Genocide Awareness Project would present to the campus community upon its arrival in Bloomington. But after visiting the GAP display last Wednesday at the Sample Gates, it became clear to me that the only thing students really have to fear is the threat that student organizations like IU Reacts To GAP pose to the free expression of ideas and to the promotion of intellectual debate on our campus.

Committee searches for alumni leader

A committee appointed by IU President Myles Brand to select a new president for the IU Alumni Association met for the first time Wednesday. The 10-member committee, chaired by IU Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer Terry Clapacs, is looking to replace Jerry Tardy, the IUAA's past president, who died of cancer earlier this semester. Tardy led the IUAA, one of the nation's five largest such organizations, for 14 years. Brand named John Hobson as interim president and chief executive officer of the IUAA earlier this month.

Still too soon for Knight

·

After last year's Knight riots, one thought kept churning over and over in my head: This is the stupidest thing I have ever seen. Angry shouts mixed with carefree laughter as thousands of students trampled over the garden in front of Bryan House, muddied the waters of Showalter Fountain and marched across campus toward a police-lined Assembly Hall.
