Grades don't make the man

I don't care about grades or what they stand for. I am a journalism major and have always believed that my grades won't matter as long as I have good examples of my work. You get a job in the writing world by having good internships, and you get an internship with your good clips, not a Grade Point Average.

March sadness

SAN DIEGO -- Freshman guard A.J. Moye tried to fight back tears when he walked off the court after IU's 77-73 loss to Kent State Thursday in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Moye had just finished playing the best game of his career. He scored a career-high 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds, including two on offense in the final four minutes that delayed the inevitable -- the upset loss to the 13th-seeded Golden Flashes.

Mixed reaction to riots

Businesses on Kirkwood Avenue were affected differently by the events Monday evening following IU's loss to Maryland in the NCAA championship game. Some stores closed early to avoid the expected crowd. Jiffy Treet, 425 E. Kirkwood Ave., closed its doors at halftime and boarded up store windows to avoid any damage, employee Ian Marks said. He and his co-workers watched the game at the store.

Fans shouldn't use profanity

Four-letter words have been finding their way into chants yelled at Assembly Hall. These chants are inappropriate, unnecessary and should not come from the mouth of anyone who's proud to be a Hoosier. There is not a "student" section at Assembly Hall. Still, basketball tickets are readily accessible for IU students trying to obtain them, and students are grouped together in random sections throughout the crowd. Students should have the integrity not to chant or yell profanities when they disagree with a referee's judgement or any other time for that matter.

The 'Halo' addiction

Although "Halo" came out for the Xbox some eight months ago I'm still addicted. The game is like digitally rendered smack. I take a hit, come down and return asking for more. It's as though I'm shooting up this first-person shooter.

Coaches are responsible

In the three seasons Rashidi Wheeler played football at Northwestern, he had over 30 asthmatic attacks. On Aug. 3 he had his last when he collapsed and died from bronchial asthma during a conditioning drill. On Aug. 23 Linda Will, Wheeler's mom, filed a lawsuit against Northwestern University, head football coach Randy Walker and other athletic department personnel.

Reconsidering U.S. policy

My column last week, "Consider Peace, Not War," inspired several incredulous students to e-mail to ask how could I take such a position. Indeed, the questions were tough: what is the United States supposed to do after the Sept. 11 hijackings? Isn't Osama bin Laden supporting the oppression of other Muslims by helping prop up the Taliban regime in Afghanistan? How can we abandon Israel, the only Middle Eastern country with some semblance of a democracy, even if you are right that it is only for Israeli Jews?

Bringing home the bucket

Finally. At last, an IU football team won a game without having to score 40 points. Without having to gain 500-plus yards. Without trading touchdowns and hoping to score the final one. IU beat Purdue 13-7 Saturday because of defense. Finally. "It feels so great to be a defensive player on this team right now," junior safety Joe Gonzalez said. "The offense has bailed us out a lot of times. They've put a lot of points on the board. The offense shouldn't have to do that.

Hoosiers defeat Bulldogs

INDIANAPOLIS -- Practice can pay off. Just ask the women's soccer team. The Hoosiers spent the last half hour of practice Monday preparing for a scoring situation identical to the one that presented itself in the second half of yesterday's game against Butler at Kuntz Field in Indianapolis. The end result was sophomore Carly Everett hitting a set kick toward the goal on the right side to junior midfielder, and Butler transfer, Kara Bryan. Bryan deflected the ball to sophomore Emily Hotz, who scored the game's only goal as Indiana downed the Bulldogs 1-0.

Morris tapped for U.N. job

A Hoosier is about to become part of the U.N. IU board of trustees President James T. Morris shared a piece of the international spotlight Tuesday as the United Nations announced its plan to make him executive director of the World Food Program. The announcement came after recent speculation that Morris would be ousted from the position by Australian Bruce Davis.
