Mixed reaction to riots

Not all Kirkwood shops hurt by crazy crowd

Businesses on Kirkwood Avenue were affected differently by the events Monday evening following IU's loss to Maryland in the NCAA championship game.\nSome stores closed early to avoid the expected crowd.\nJiffy Treet, 425 E. Kirkwood Ave., closed its doors at halftime and boarded up store windows to avoid any damage, employee Ian Marks said. He and his co-workers watched the game at the store.\nThe Village Deli shut down at 5 p.m., employee Scott Campion said. It usually stays open until 10 p.m. He said there was no damage to the building.\nKilroy's on Kirkwood, 502 E. Kirkwood Ave., however, did not close early by choice. Tear gas let off by police to disperse the crowd came in the door of the bar at approximately 1:30 a.m., manager Taylor Marrow said.\n"A lot of people cleared out," he said. "Everybody was hurting."\nMarrow said Kilroy's tried to stay open, but no one could stand the tear gas -- some people were even vomiting from it. He said the building itself was not damaged.\nCafe Pizzaria, 405 E. Kirkwood Ave., which saw an increase in business Monday night, closed as the game ended, manager Andrew Storrs said. \n"It was completely packed," he said, noting there was someone at every table where a TV could be seen.\nNo visible damage was done to the store, although it is possible damage was done to the roof because people always climb up there during similar situations, Storrs said.\n"If we would have won, I think it might have gotten worse," Cafe Pizzaria employee Craig Hugus said.\nHugus, a senior, was at The Upstairs Pub, 430 E. Kirkwood Ave., Monday. He said he didn't see any fights or damage while he was there. When he left the bar, he said he was affected by the lingering tear gas. His face hurt, he was sneezing and his nose was running. \nThe storefront of Kirkwood Avenue clothing retailer Urban Outfitters, 530 E. Kirkwood Ave., was damaged during the melee Monday night as well.\nFor more information relating to the Chaos on Kirkwood, see tomorrow's IDS.
