Independent store celebrates one year

A year after Boxcar books opened its doors to the Bloomington public, the independent and non profit bookstore celebra-ted its Feb. 1 birthday with a sale on books, readings by local artists, food, a raffle, as well as two separate auctions.

A legacy or a dream deferred?

I was not surprised to find that the least quoted portion of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech during the 1963 March on Washington was the following passage: "When the architects of our republic wrote the magniaficent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned … America has given the Negro people a bad check, which has come back marked 'insufficient funds …"

As the son of two Bronx-raised parents, naturally, I've always loved baseball -- especially my favorite "evil empire," the Yankees. Of all the thrilling moments -- World Championships, high-profile off-season acquisitions, and the merciless taunts of blue-collar road-warrior Bronx Bomber fans showered upon traumatized Jacobs Field patrons -- the two most memorable had little to do with baseball.

Saturday, when we turned our TVs to CBS to watch the basketball game, we saw footage of what appreared to be a falling star. We were to find out that not one, but seven had fallen that day at nine o'clock, and there would be no basketball as a result.

NASA loses contact with shuttle

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Space shuttle Columbia apparently disintegrated in flames over Texas minutes before it was to land Saturday in Florida. TV video showed what appeared to be falling debris, as NASA declared an emergency and sent search teams to the Dallas-Fort Worth area. In north Texas, several residents reported hearing "a big bang" at about 9 a.m., the same time all radio and data communication with the shuttle and its crew of seven was lost.

Miami police surround mail truck after 90-minute chase through city streets

MIAMI -- Dozens of heavily armed police officers surrounded what appeared to be a hijacked mail truck after a 90-minute slow-speed chase through the city's streets Friday. Television station WFOR-TV reported that an armed man was holding a female mail carrier during the pursuit, but police refused to confirm the report. A television helicopter shot showed two guns in a mail bin on the passenger's seat.

Modern dance minor premieres with concert tonight

Tonight Bloomington will have a chance to enjoy the products of IU's newest addition to the Kinesiology Department -- the dance minor program. IU began this program last year, and already there are 85 students minoring in it.
