Good show, seniors

·

It's the moment you've all been waiting for: The day where I have nothing but good things to say about an IU performance (well, mostly good things).

Team tensions run high as IU faces Wisconsin

·

It's a team that beat IU (12-14, 5-11 Big Ten) on its home court in front of a record-breaking crowd. It's also a team that squashed the Hoosier's 17-1 run in a road game back in February when IU barely pulled off a 49-48 win.

Freshmen take senior lead

·

For the Hoosiers' water polo team, senior leadership is essential to the success of the team. The Hoosiers' seniors, led by All-American Kristin Stanford, are the backbone of the team. But even the seniors need a little motivation sometimes to keep them on their competitive edge.

Palestinian suicide bomber kills 16, injures 55

·

HAIFA, Israel -- A bomber blew himself up aboard a bus filled with students in this northern Israeli city Wednesday, killing at least 16 people and injuring 55. The blast spread blood-splattered debris throughout a prosperous hilltop neighborhood, ending a two-month lull in suicide bombings.

Students behind the uniforms

·

Were you out killing people tonight?" That's what someone asked sophomore Stephan Jerabek, a Reserve Officer Training Corps cadet, when he returned to his dorm room in uniform on a recent Friday night.

IU to protect cyberspace from terrorist attacks

·

In an effort to enhance the security of the nation's cyber infrastructure, IU recently signed an agreement to cooperate with the National Infrastructure Protection Center in Washington, D.C. The agreement is a response to President Bush's "National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace," a plan which includes a call for the establishment of academic centers for security research and training to advance cooperation between government and industry.

Let soda pop pay for medical bills

·

The money's gotta come from somewhere. A coalition of health care providers are lobbying for a tax on syrup and powder, two ingredients used to make soft drinks. The money raised by the tax would go toward Indiana's $4 billion Medicaid plan. Predictions indicate that following through with the proposal would raise $164.8 million for the program.

Weather and traffic cause overcrowding on Transit buses

·

Riders on the Bloomington Transit buses have gotten very close lately, and it hasn't been because of great conversations. These bus riders have had to board a crammed green and white bus to get a lift to and from campus, leaving little room for comfort.

Council begins chancellor review

·

The Bloomington Faculty Council discussed the implementation of a possible administrative review for chancellors at all the IU campuses at its meeting Tuesday. The review, which is currently in draft form, is designed to provide the president and trustees with information concerning the quality of leadership provided by chancellors. "I think we have a lot of goodwill surrounding this," said BFC president Bob Eno. "Everyone wants to see this succeed."

Really, lighten up

·

Morale is at rock-bottom. War and terrorism are threatening, race issues have been ignited, we're all obese and the weather sucks. I'm in no way trying to trivialize these significant matters, but it may do us some good to step back and lighten up. To combat the stress, here's what's been preying on my mind as of late:

Who is Mr. Cellophane?

·

Anonymity is a privilege many Web surfers take for granted. On the Internet, you can completely mask yourself from society, become transparent and share your views with the whole world. Chat rooms, bulletin boards and e-mail are all ways users can remain anonymous and discuss their views. But a current case involving the alleged defamation of a Pennsylvania Superior Court Judge might open up the floodgates of possible punishment for remarks made anonymously on the Internet.

Reading the president's mind

·

I sometimes wonder what goes through the U.S. president's mind. I see him as a lucid man with strong values -- to believe otherwise would mean that our planet is doomed to a dark period of conflicts and the dismantling of an international community that humanity has been building since after World War II, when the U.N. charter was signed in San Francisco.

A new kind of stupid

·

I was a freshman once. Now, I can barely remember those carefree times of innocence, youth and hope.

Duck for flying babies

·

It's been hard to avoid the recent onslaught of flying babies. Bathwater is being tossed in monsoon-like proportions, and cannonades of proverbial tots are getting pitched right with it. Legislators, columnists and citizens alike are guilty of creating the torrents, and forecasters say it just won't stop until people learn to distinguish one issue from another.

Bases should be moved

·

The nature of the threat American forces will confront in the future has changed in recent years. We no longer need to amass giant armies to confront the Soviets head on. Following this dramatic change, it is time to update our military's strategic position around the world to counter the new danger.

Walk-out is the beginning

·

To all the naysayers protesting the anti-war walk-out and all the protesters feeling proud: Protesting an impending war should disrupt your day. It should screw up your schedule. War protest is not something to fit in during your free time. Shake it up. Do something real.

Hoosiers anticipate rematch with rival Michigan

·

The IU women's water polo team travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., this weekend to compete in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Weekend on Saturday and Sunday. Along with IU, other teams competing include Penn State-Behrend, Mercyhurst, Washington, Jefferson and the host school Michigan.
