Navy carriers to leave Gulf

WASHINGTON -- Two U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and the ships in their battle groups will leave the Persian Gulf this week and return to their home ports, a U.S. defense official said Monday.

Dow industrials surge more than 140 in light trading

NEW YORK -- Investors attracted by lower prices, but still wary of first-quarter earnings, sent stocks soaring Monday, a break from last week's declines. The Dow Jones industrials climbed more than 140 points but volume was light, a sign that many investors want to see more profit reports before making any major moves.

'The Boy Next Door' a charming date

Gentlemen, you may stop reading this now. I don't want to waste any of your time, and I honestly would be shocked to see a man read "The Boy Next Door," a delightfully campy trip through the mind of a single gossip columnist and her quest to find love in the big city with, you guessed it, the boy next door. A book written by a woman for women, it is an extraordinary example of Meggin Cabot's ability to write a novel in an unusual format and still keep the reader wildly entertained. "The Boy Next Door" is Cabot's first attempt at an adult novel; she is best known for writing the "Princess Diaries" series under the nom de plum Meg Cabot.

Fire kills five despite house safety features

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- An off-campus house where five college students died in a fire on Sunday had at least six working smoke detectors and four fire extinguishers that worked but had not been used, an attorney for the owner said.

Tough seventh seals 2-2 split with Spartans

The Hoosier baseball team entered this weekend's four-game set with one goal in mind. They wanted to take at least three of four games from Michigan State and gain some ground in the Big Ten standings. Instead, IU split the home series with the Big Ten bottom-dwelling Spartans and are now tied with Ohio State for second in the conference with Illinois and Purdue looming just one game back. The Hoosiers now stand at 22-9 overall and 7-5 in the Big Ten, four games back of Big Ten leader Minnesota, which still owns an unblemished conference mark of 10-0.

The men's track and field team competed in its first home meet of the season this weekend and was fortunate enough to have perfect weather. The squad went up against tough competition with Central Michigan and Indiana State and came out on top of the triangular meet, by two points over the Chippewas 157-155. Team falls in pair of Big Ten matches

While the women's tennis team looked impressive at times this weekend, it failed to record a victory. The Hoosiers (9-14, 1-7 Big Ten) faced the Iowa Hawkeyes (7-13, 3-5) and lost a close match 4-3. The competition continued Sunday against a Minnesota team (14-5, 7-1) that is tied for first place in the Big Ten standings.
