Who wants an internship?

The competition is fierce this fall as students struggle to get their foot in the door at any one of the hundreds of companies that are visiting IU. Many would argue that an internship will provide you with the best method for securing your first job in corporate America. Students, not wanting to become part of the 6.1 percent of Americans without jobs, are quick to take internships with the companies that appear at IU's career days and internship fairs.

Bush administration pushes Iraq spending

WASHINGTON -- The administration wants $100 million for an Iraqi witness protection program, $290 million to hire, train and house thousands of firefighters, $9 million to modernize the postal service, including establishment of ZIP codes.

Nightclub capitalizes on IU partying woes

When Dan Duncan entered IU as a freshman, he had big plans. "I declared a biochemistry major and was set on going to medical school after four years at IU," Duncan said. In his first year, Dan pledged and joined Delta Upsilon fraternity and began a side job as a greek party disc jockey three nights a week. Today, as the co-owner and founder of Vertigo night club, Duncan is a long way from medical school.

Contest finds 'beautiful babies'

The search for the "most beautiful baby" in the region began Sunday at College Mall. The contest, held by New Star Directory Inc., is a regional competition where winners and state runner-ups will continue on to Indianapolis for the state finals. After finals, contestants travel to Chicago for national competition. Winners in Indianapolis receive a $5,000 savings bond and the winner of nationals gets a $25,000 savings bond. Each participant in the regional competition received a trophy.

Soldier killed in Baghdad car bombing identified as Indiana native

FORT CARSON, Colo. -- A Fort Carson soldier who was killed in Iraq over the weekend when a bomb exploded near his Humvee was identified Monday as an Indiana man. Staff Sgt. Frederick L. Miller Jr., 27, of Hagerstown, Ind., was killed Saturday night outside Ramadi, about 60 miles west of Baghdad, the Defense Department said.

Program to donate supplies

United Way celebrates 40th anniversary

The United Way Family Services Association is celebrating its 40th year by offering a series of free lunch talks open to residents and students. For the next three Fridays, the UWFSA will provide free speakers who will discuss and offer advice on issues such as divorce, problem solving within a family and the experience of growing up in a family with someone who was a substance-abuser or involved with other compulsive behavior.

Clancy's 'Red Rabbit' weaves tale of intrigue, mystery

'Kiss Me Kate' opens at IU Auditorium tonight

Five former Hoosiers join Hall Athletic Hall of Fame

Making its first trip back to the LaVern Gibson Championship course in Terre Haute since its 14th place finish at the 2002 NCAA Championship meet, the IU women's cross country team put its No. 18 ranking on the line. Tie barely avoids first Big Ten loss in 8 years

IU contains All-American in loss

Through the first quarter of Saturday's game against Kentucky, it looked like star Wildcat wideout Derek Abney was on his way to another offensively potent game. On Kentucky's third drive, the senior -- who came into the game third in Wildcat history in pass receptions -- caught one ball for a first down, took a reverse for 24 yards, and then split the IU defense for a 29-yard touchdown reception and the early lead.

Chances blown in loss

Before the season starts, IU's coaches scout their first four opponents. This year, Coach Gerry DiNardo circled the UConn and Kentucky games as 'big' since they promised to be closely contested. The Hoosiers already lost to UConn, and Saturday, IU's offense couldn't capitalize on two first quarter possessions starting near the 50-yard line and saw a tight 13-10 halftime deficit fall apart in the third quarter into a 34-17 Kentucky run away in front of 34,829 fans at Memorial Stadium. "We went into this week saying this was a big game, a big rivalry and an important game," DiNardo said. "We put a lot into it. We put a lot of pressure on ourselves as coaches and on the players. I think we played a little bit better than we did at Connecticut, and I would say that is the good news."

Indiana memorials honor O'Bannon

East Coast recovers from Isabel

The East Coast is beginning to recover after Hurricane Isabel hit land Thursday, damaging areas in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Delaware. All four states have been declared federal disaster areas. The hardest hit region was North Carolina's Hatteras Island where an inlet was cut between Hatteras and Frisco, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
