Phi Mu celebrates 80 years at IU

Phi Mu sorority celebrated its 80th anniversary of the Delta Alpha chapter of IU at the chapter's house at 1442 N. Jordan Ave. Saturday afternoon. The festivities included an open house for students, faculty and members and a special initiation ceremony.

Academic advisor's music to play in movie

Academic advisor Jeanette Castillo spent a mere 16 hours writing and producing her song "Christmas in Whoville." Other recording artists spent months preparing work for the Universal Studios contest to find a theme song for Ron Howard's new multi-million dollar film "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas", starring Jim Carrey.

Volleyball team falls to Iowa, No. 6 Minnesota

The volleyball team dropped two Big Ten games this weekend in its conference home openers. The Hoosiers are 10-4 overall and 1-3 in the Big Ten. IU fell to Iowa (7-5, 3-1) in five games Friday (5-15, 15-12, 15-9, 7-15, 6-15) and then dropped three consecutive games to No. 6 Minnesota Saturday (15-9,15-12, 15-8).

Big Brothers/Big Sisters' waiting list grows

Imagine not meeting one of your best friends for another three years. Right now, more than 100 children are on the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Monroe County's waiting list, and a child often might wait two to three years for a match.

Bloomington should practice tolerance

The Bloomington City Council should be embarrassed for even considering such an ordinance as banning skateboarding from public parking lots. But the council not only considered it; it will vote on the issue Wednesday, the IDS reported Friday.

IU education is far from mediocre

Several senior faculty members have recently expressed concerns about IU's low ranking among Big Ten universities by U.S. News & World Report. They claim IU's status as a research university has been falling over the past decade and that there is a "culture of mediocrity" on campus.

The RU-486 pill has passed FDA approval and will soon be readily available to the public. Now a woman can end her pregnancy within the first seven weeks easily and without too much hassle. This is touted as a progressive move for women's rights.

This week, the Federal Reserve will meet and make a statement about interest rates and inflation. "This meeting is going to be pretty boring," Sung Won Sohn, chief economist at Wells Fargo & Co., told msnbc.com. "They likely will put more emphasis on inflation, especially because of the price of oil going up significantly."

Pat Knight accepts position at University of Akron

Pat Knight, former assistant men's basketball coach and son of former coach Bob Knight, has accepted an assistant coaching position with the University of Akron's men's basketball team. Knight will replace Saint Crawford, who is looking at another position elsewhere. Knight's official start date is Oct. 16.

Serenades set up homecoming pairs

Some say it's done for tradition. Some say it's for fun. Others think it's pointless. Still, each year around Homecoming many greek houses take part in serenades. Wednesday night, several sororities and fraternities took turns singing, dancing and performing skits for each other.
