Assistance centers suffering job cuts

·

INDIANAPOLIS -- A drop in grants and donations has caused several low-income assistance centers in the city to lay off workers and reduce or eliminate their programs. One of the city's 13 community centers, for instance, is cutting from five to four the days it serves meals to senior citizens and provides social activities for them. Another has laid off three people and given unpaid vacations to 12 others.

Six degrees of al Qaeda

·

There has been a revival of the "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game," except a few rules have been modified. No longer is the object to relate celebrities to America's amiable star of Friday the 13th -- the first one. The new game allows many more degrees of separation and is much more challenging: Take any arbitrary social issue the right-wing deems threatening, and connect it to terrorism.

Justifying War

·

Suppose you were thinking about getting into a long distance relationship. To help clear things up, you ask your friend and he says "absence makes the heart grow fonder." Dating someone four hours away doesn't sound so bad, you think. But then you go talk to your other friend and he says "out of sight, out of mind." Uh oh. What is the right answer? In truth, neither. This is what can be called cliché thinking. Clichés are a mental crutch because they relieve us from having to think. It is dangerous to rely on them. However, clichés are not just for love. Students here at IU are now using clichés to justify their views on war with Iraq.

Hate in a wool coat

·

Last week, around the campus and the world, people celebrated the life, the work and the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Many people took time to pause and reflect the accomplishments and thesuccesses, but that still doesn't mean we don't have a long way to go on civil rights issues. In fact, I encourage people everywhere, and especially the students within the Bloomington collegiate community, to realize one very important fact: Regardless of race, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, etc. -- we're all very cold.

Komen Breast Cancer Foundation after the single-game attendance at a women's game was broken on Friday night at the Wisconsin game.
