Hoosiers lose battle against rival Spartans

·

For the first time this season, the No. 13 Hoosiers lost consecutive games. Coming off a similar 1-0 loss to the No. 18 Michigan Wolverines at home, the IU women's field hockey team traveled to the Great Lake state this weekend and was defeated 1-0 again by its Big Ten rival, the Michigan State Spartans. The Spartans (6-11, 1-4 Big Ten), who came into the game without a Big Ten win, were able to beat the Hoosiers thanks to the Spartans' Ashley Pernicano, who scored on a tip-in in the 24th minute of play.

No. 9 IU loses to Penn State, unbeaten streak snaps at 8

·

The IU men's soccer team fell to conference rival Penn State for the third straight time in Fox Soccer Channel's Game of the Week Friday night. The Nittany Lions needed a lone goal in the first two minutes of the game to snap the No. 9 Hoosiers' eight-game unbeaten streak, defeating them 1-0. Although the Hoosiers out-shot the Nittany Lions 9-5, the cream and crimson were unable to get the tying goal.

Legal terror

·

Last week, President Bush, with his lapdog Senate at his side, passed a bill making his controversial treatment of foreign detainees into law. Call me naive, but I was truly expecting the Senate to be more discerning. Wasn't it just six weeks ago that the country was aflame with outrage at the exposure of secret prisons and possible torture?

Empire of liberty

·

We do not have a government much concerned with our national character. If anything, our current administration is out to remake our national character into something (dangerous militarism) it has never been." -- Democratic strategist Gary Hart.

What the F?

·

It was recently brought to my attention that many of my peers -- even some I consider very thoughtful and intelligent -- understand feminism and feminists as something inherently bad or, at least, scary and aversive. So I am here today, friends -- boys and girls alike -- to dispel some unfortunate myths about what it means to be a feminist. I hope to do so as sarcastically and arrogantly as possible (not because feminists are arrogant -- only yours truly). A complimentary snack of unsalted cashews and Diet Sprite will be distributed halfway through. Sit back and enjoy!

Riding along in whose automobile?

·

On Thursday, the Indiana Daily Student ran a story concerning a proposal to open bids for the running of IU's motor pool to private companies, an issue that has upset those who believe outsourcing will compromise IU's commitment to current employees.

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Bombs ripped through a Baghdad market and a bakery Sunday as shoppers were stocking up on sweets and other delicacies to celebrate a major Muslim holiday, and at least five people were killed, police said. Hilarious production of 'Urinetown' boasts strong cast

·

What kind of musical is this?" Little Sally exclaims toward the end of "Urinetown, The Musical." Well, it is certainly not a conventional one -- but it is a great one. "Urinetown" is about the "privilege to pee," and members of the audience very well might laugh until they take advantage of that privilege.

I'd 'Zune'r die...

·

When I heard that music "downloaded" from the new music service Ruckus (free for all IU students) wouldn't play on iPods, I was pretty surprised. Why would Ruckus and its protected, non-user-friendly file types willingly alienate a good number of student iPod owners? But I was even more astounded when I learned that Microsoft is, in turn, alienating all its anti-Mac buddies and subscribers to services such as Ruckus with its new portable music player, Zune.

Success required

·

Pen in hand, hand cramping and eyes on wrist watch, students at IU take midterm examinations as they do every October: in sheer frustration. Not frustration at the concepts or at their professors' lack of teaching ability, but frustration at the crowded schedules with which they have to deal at the eight-week mark in the semester.
