Logging issue needs addressed

When the Bush Administration back-pedaled on protecting the last remaining wild areas in America's national forests, many of us in the scientific community took notice. For much of the past century, the Forest Service, entrusted as the institutional steward of our national forests, focused its management on an industrial-scale logging program. The result of the massive logging and road construction program was to damage watersheds, destroy wildlife habitat and imperil plant and animal species.

It's springtime again. The trees are blooming with flowers, the Jordan River is actually flowing and the sidewalks are littered with post-rain worms. I can hear them yelling out in their little wormy voices, begging to be stepped on. They'd rather be squished underfoot than suffer a slow death baking on cement under an 80-degree Bloomington springtime sun.

IU faculty members Jeffrey Gould, professor of history and director of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and Rosemary Lloyd, Rudy Professor of French, have been awarded Guggenheim Fellowships for 2002. The fellowships are awarded based on the basis of distinguished past achievement and potential for future accomplishment. Gouls and Lloyd will each receive approximately $36,000 to fund research opportunities for the upcoming year.

Students to be honored for environmental ideas

Program lets IU women interact, network through science

IU campus to confer twelve honorary degrees

All eight of IU's campuses will hold commencement ceremonies at the beginning of May. Undergraduate and graduate students will be honored, and doctoral students will receive their hoods at each of the ceremonies. A total of 14,469 degrees will be conferred on students.

Greek events end early

The Mike and Joe concert sponsored by Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity was halted early Thursday morning when two guests were found with alcohol. The concert, which was scheduled from midnight to 3 a.m., was halted at about 1:10 a.m. According to a memo to Assistant Dean of Students James Gibson, the event, which was registered with the Student Activities Office, was intended to be a dry function. Twenty members of TKE ran security, along with Troy Thompson, an off-duty police officer.

Renovation plans in place for 3 residence halls

Dorm renovation is a continuous process. By working to update and improve on-campus housing, Residential Programs and Services hopes to increase retention of dorm residents and increase the quality of life for those residents in the coming years. Eigenmann Hall is currently undergoing renovations, and plans are in the works for improvements to Ashton Center and Foster Quad.

Andersen not prepared to talk

WASHINGTON -- Arthur Andersen LLP abruptly broke off talks Thursday with the Justice Department on settling criminal obstruction charges related to the destruction of documents in the financial collapse of Enron Corp. The lawyer for the Andersen accounting firm notified government lawyers that the company was not in position to make a decision on any criminal settlement, a Justice official said.

Regular season ends on road before Big Ten tourney

The IU women's tennis team closes its regular season this weekend on the road. The Hoosiers travel north to battle Michigan and Michigan State. IU faces the Spartans Saturday at 10 a.m. in East Lansing, then travels to Ann Arbor to play Michigan at the same time Sunday.

No Michigan might mean IU victory at OSU

In each of the women's golf teams last two tournaments, Michigan won and IU took second. This weekend, the Hoosiers compete in the Lady Buckeye Invitational, taking on a field that is without the Wolverines. But that doesn't mean the Hoosiers anticipate an easy victory.

Postseason play begins

The IU water polo team begins its postseason play Friday as it competes in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern District Championships. The top five teams in the District advance to the Eastern Championships.

Golfers confident playing top-notch Ohio course

Akron, Ohio, is known as the "Rubber Capital of the World." It is also home of the well-respected Firestone Country Club, host of the FirstEnergy Intercollegiate. IU will play in the 54-hole tourney Saturday and Sunday. The Hoosiers will play in Ohio at a course with a championship pedigree for the second-straight week. Last week, it was the Ohio State Scarlet course, where IU finished in sixth place at the site of the 2002 NCAA Championships.

Among the nation's best: IU in line for top-10 finish in Sears Cup standings

IU is currently eighth in the Sears Directors' Cup standings, according to the latest release. If IU were to finish the 2001-02 sports season at the current ranking, it would be IU's highest finish since the overall collegiate sports award -- which is given to one NAIA school and one from each of the three NCAA divisions -- was introduced eight years ago.

Hoosiers hope to transfer momentum to conference contests

Spring finale played tonight

Fourteen down, one more to go. The IU football team concludes its spring practice schedule with the Cream and Crimson Scrimmage 7 p.m. Friday at Memorial Stadium after the women's Little 500. The scrimmage marks the 15th and final practice in the spring, and this will be the last time new Head coach Gerry DiNardo and his staff get to look at their inherited team until camp in the summer.

The IU baseball team faces a big challenge when it plays host to Big Ten front-runner Ohio State in a four-game series this weekend. The second-place Hoosiers (27-8, 8-4 Big Ten) will attempt to overtake the Big Ten lead from the Buckeyes (21-9-1, 9-3), who have three first-team 2001 All-Big Ten honorees in first baseman Nick Swisher, designated hitter Doug Deeds and starting pitcher E.J. Laratta.
