The Bloomington post office is closing its downtown location in 2009. The First United Methodist Church is not renewing the U.S. Postal Service’s lease on the Fourth Street location, ending a 60-year stay.

I’ll admit that boys who walk around with low-slung pants and exposed boxers look like major tools. That applies both to the “suburban urban dude” and the “tight pants Emo wimp.” I also hate being forcibly exposed to the thongs of my female classmates. Despite my own personal views on the issue, I’m still baffled by the good people of Atlanta, who decided to a hold a public hearing centered on exposed undergarments.

Dylan, Costello to play Assembly Hall

Union Board and IU Auditorium have announced that Bob Dylan and Elvis Costello will play Assembly Hall at 7 p.m Oct. 19. Tickets for show will go on sale at 10 a.m. Sept. 7, and can be purchased at the IU Auditorium and all Ticketmaster locations, or online at ticketmaster.com. Ticket prices are $30, $45, and $55.

Freshmen receive free entry to 1st football game

In its latest marketing strategy to draw more fans to Memorial Stadium to see the football team play, the IU Athletics Department is giving all freshmen free tickets to this weekend’s IU vs. Indiana State football game.

Campus Bus Service adds 2 routes

Extra bus routes were met with a record number of riders Monday. The campus bus service hauled more than 23,000 passengers on the first day of classes, utilizing its full 23-bus fleet for the first time in at least a year. It added two new routes and 12 full-time employees to help accommodate the increasing number of riders.

Preparing for pets

Griffin, a two-month-old border collie mix, played happily in his new home on Madison Street, after being adopted Monday from the Bloomington Animal Shelter. He was one of the first animals to get a new home thanks to the shelter’s half-off “back-to-school special” on all of its adoptable dogs and cats. From now until Sept. 9, dogs and cats younger than five years are $37.50 and older animals are $27.50. All pets come vaccinated, neutered and microchipped.

Multiple Varsity Villas units burglarized

The Bloomington Police Department arrested a Bloomington resident after learning he had burglarized several units in an area apartment complex. Justin Franklin, 23, was arrested after allegedly stealing items from three apartments in the Varsity Villas, located at 2015 N. Dunn St.

‘Get a ride’ posters new IU bus feature

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 34 percent of the 938 traffic fatalities in Indiana in 2005 were alcohol-related. Of all adults placed on probation in Monroe County during 2006, 37 percent were convicted of impaired driving, according to a press release from the mayor’s office. Of those, 12 percent were involved in a crash and 28 percent were repeat drunk driving offenders. Monroe County Prosecuting Attorney Chris Gaal said these statistics are unacceptable.

War opponents get emotional during local protest

It’s been hot in Bloomington the last few weeks, but not like Baghdad. This was the opening sentiment of the candlelight vigil held 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Sample Gates. More than 30 people gathered in an organized effort to hold Congress responsible to end the war in Iraq.

IU football prepares for 1st game Saturday

The Hoosiers are hoping to learn from last season’s mistakes. After jumping out to a 2-0 start in 2006, the IU football team dropped its next two games – both at home – to Division I-AA Southern Illinois and Division I-A Connecticut. Had they been able to win just one of those two games, IU would have been bowl eligible for the first time in 13 years.

Library committee seeks union

The second-best library in the nation may become only the third library in the state to unionize its workers. In the wake of benefit cuts at Monroe County Public Library, ranked No. 2 in the nation last year for libraries of its size by Hennen’s American Public Library Ratings, a group of employees has teamed up in an effort to create a workers’ union.

No. 2-rated recruits impress early, often

In 2006, the IU men’s soccer team earned its 12th Big Ten regular season championship and its 11th Big Ten tournament championship. This year, the Hoosiers will have a different look as a team, but they will still be in search of the same achievements after signing a freshman class rated No. 2 in the nation by College Soccer News. This class includes four high school All-Americans and last year’s top scorer in the state.

Freshman scorer to miss season

IU freshman Alec Purdie will sit out this men’s soccer season with a medical redshirt because of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury he sustained during the summer.
