In response to Levin

Jacob, I would think you like not being compared to Chase Cooper. Yes, you might espouse ideas that run in the face of the majority of IU’s students, but at least you express them in a rational manner, unlike the mean-spirited partisan bent that is Chase’s forte.

Stand up and dance!

On Oct. 19, I drove 800-plus miles to see Bob Dylan play at my alma mater. I went to many concerts at the auditorium in my day (Bright Eyes and OAR come to mind).

Capitalism doesn’t dictate cultural values

In Chase Cooper’s Oct. 3 opinion piece “Misery insurance,” he explains why the Congressional revision of the State Children’s Heath Insurance Program (SCHIP) is unnecessary. Simply put, Cooper argues that the growing number of uninsured in America is an unavoidable consequence of our capitalist economy and that the cost of providing health care to uninsured children is not worth an increase in taxes, a loss of freedoms or possible economic hindrance.

Racism still a problem

Although I’m not affiliated with your fine institution, please allow me to comment on Jonathan P. Rossing’s commentary (“In Our Genes,” Oct. 25). I must say, Mr. Rossing hit the nail right on the head – and hard!

Clerk: Student voter turnout ‘typically very, very low’

Voting inspectors said districts that primarily consist of students had low voter turn-out in Tuesday’s municipal election. At the Teter Quad polling facility, voting inspector Tom Duffy said the turnout was “very light.” Duffy said by 3:30 p.m. the voter turnout was “so light we can count ‘em on two hands.”

Provost lays out possible smoking ban exceptions

·

The use of all tobacco products will be prohibited on University property starting Jan. 1, but Provost Karen Hanson might grant exceptions to the policy. “You can’t make addicted smokers cease addiction overnight,” Hanson said. The policy states exceptions might be granted by the provost for the use of tobacco products in areas near resident facilities and the Indiana Memorial Union.
