Local photographer shows new work at Monroe Bank

People scuttled out of the slush and wind Thursday night into the warm Monroe Bank Art Gallery for local photographer William E. Bennett’s new exhibit reception. Inside, bank tellers and management greeted the lobby filled with people of varying ages who chatted about the photographs on display. Monroe Bank on Kirkwood Avenue has served as a local outlet for artists to show their work for the last couple of years.

Play shows different side of American history

If Bessie Delany was still alive, she would likely be shocked. More than 100 years old when she died, Delany never saw Barack Obama get elected – an event she once said wouldn’t happen for a thousand years. Even though Delany died in 1995, she and her sisters’ story lives on in theaters around the country in the play “Having Our Say.”

Ballet overcomes weather at MAC

Spinning, leaping and graceful dancers flawlessly executed their choreographed arabesques, pirouettes and fouettes in the IU Ballet Department’s “On The Edge.”The show, originally scheduled for two performances Wednesday at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, was postponed until Thursday due to snow. IU Ballet Theater moved the show to the Musical Arts Center ballet studio because the Buskirk was booked for Thursday.

Cracking jokes about the recession, global warming and love-making, Arj Barker kept the audience laughing during a two-hour set Thursday night at the Funny Bone Comedy Club.Barker, who portrays Dave on HBO’s “Flight of the Conchords,” performed five times in Bloomington this weekend. Performing with him was Andi Smith, who appeared on Comedy Central’s “Last Comic Standing.”About 50 people attended the weekend’s first show. Brian M. Frange was the emcee for the night, opening with jokes about reality TV.

Another loss: IU's streak slides to 11

The Hoosiers (5-15, 0-8) reluctantly made history Saturday with their 11th consecutive loss, tying a 66-year-old school record. Ohio State outscored IU by 14 points after halftime to beat IU 93-81.

IU slain in front of chaotic home crowd

On Saturday, with the players focused, the crowd borderline riotous and a two-point lead at the half, Hoosier fans were once again forced to ask themselves, “Could today be the day?”

Bedbugs emerge in large numbers

According to the National Pest Management Association, bedbug incidents increased about 70 percent between 2000 and 2005, and New York City recorded a 1,900 percent increase in bedbug complaints since 2004.

Students seek housing at 13th annual fair

Students uncertain about their housing had the chance to view all of their options in one room on Thursday. More than 100 housing options were available during the 13th annual Indiana Daily Student Housing Fair on Thursday in Alumni Hall in the Indiana Memorial Union. Last year more than 1,000 students attended the housing fair, compared to this year’s student attendance of 850.

Guards getting better in Big Ten

The general wisdom surrounding Tom Crean at Marquette suggested he was a coach guards would love. His up-tempo, drive-and-kick system created lots of open looks for shooters and assists for passers, creating legends such as Dwyane Wade, Travis Diener and the impressive backcourt trio he left in Milwaukee to take the reins at IU.

Hailong Ren was emcee at the 2008 Chinese New Year celebration sponsored by the IU Chinese Student and Scholar Association. This year, however, he will spend the celebration behind the scenes as he works backstage to keep the show running smoothly.
