Fong will be replacing interim president Gwen A. Fountain in June. Geoffrey Banister, who served as president for 10 years, ended his term a year ago.

The virus, which attacks the human immune system, has changed attitudes and ideas about sex, sexuality and life. AIDS also is the subject of some of the most haunting and beautiful works of modern art -- especially that of the theater.

Musical to close tonight

Tonight is the last chance to catch this year's national tour of the classic musical "Show Boat" at the IU Auditorium. Based on a novel by Edna Ferber and created for the stage by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II, the original "Show Boat" had its debut in 1927 to rave reviews. Set on the Mississippi River in the late 1800s, the crew of the boat, the Cotton Blossom, takes the audience to a bygone day as "Show Boat" follows the lives of Cap'n Andy Hawkes, his wife Parthy and his daughter Magnolia.

State gas tax hike might help roads

A growing backlog of road projects has led Democrats in the Indiana House to propose raising the gas tax by three cents a gallon. This bill needs to be passed because it will fix Indiana roads and bridges and would re-allocate the gas tax to fund only transportation projects.

Off-duty trooper was at Theta Chi party

An off-duty Indiana State Police officer guarded the door to the Theta Chi fraternity house during the Jan. 27 party where freshman Seth Korona is believed to have suffered a skull fracture, University officials said. Korona, 19, died Feb. 4 after several days in a coma. The Indiana State Police officer was working at the time for Alliance Security, a company operated by the Indiana State Police Alliance, Don Cook, executive director of the Alliance, told The Associated Press.
