Hoosiers optimistic about weekend matches

·

Coming off two disappointing losses last weekend to Northwestern and Louisville, the IU field hockey team will conclude its three game home stand today against Michigan State at 3 p.m. at the Mellencamp Pavilion. Following the Louisville match, where the Hoosiers fell 3-0 to the No. 9 ranked Cardinals, freshman back Clara Loots was pleased with the team\'s play. But Loots expressed disappointment with IU\'s inability to score goals.

Police arrest alleged voyeur

·

After a two-year investigation of a man who allegedly secretly videotaped hundreds of IU women under the guise of a model search, police arrested a suspect Wednesday night in Woodburn Hall. IU Police Department Detective Greg McClure, who has been on the case since 1999, said a final check of Room 118 paid off at 8 p.m. when he arrested Timothy S. Joyce, 32, of Greenwood, Ind. He was charged with Class D Felony Voyeurism.

Runners compete in Pre-Nationals

·

The men's cross-country team is headed to Greenville, S.C. for the Pre-National Meet this Saturday. It is being held this year at Furman University. The race features 18 of the top 25 teams in the nation, and it could have a major impact on the Hoosiers season. "We need to beat as many (ranked) teams as we can," sophomore Bart Phariss said.

Women's team hungry for a win

·

The volleyball team is anxious. "We're hungry for a win," said senior Disney Bronnenberg. Their recent loss to St. Louis has left the team with a taste for victory. Before heading to St. Louis, coach Katie Weismiller said they were ready to play their best, especially in conference games.

Columnist says 'we are all rejects'

·

A famous army slogan was given a new spin Wednesday night. With his guitar by his side, syndicated advice columnist Harlan Cohen exclaimed, "Be the best reject you can be!" Best-known for his syndicated advice column "Help Me Harlan", Cohen presented different ideas about dating and rejection to IU students. The forum, "College in the Nude," took place in Willkie Auditorium and included many hilarious songs such as "Why Reject Me?" and "Girl Walks By."

Crew set to compete in two regattas

·

This weekend is a big one for the women's rowing team; a "grand slam" said coach Mark Wilson. The Hoosiers travel to Illinois for two regattas -- the Chicago Chase in Chicago Saturday, Oct. 13 and the Head of the Rock in Rockford, Ill., Sunday, Oct. 14. "I am looking forward to this weekend a great deal," Wilson said. "I know that our A 8 (boat) is faster than they showed on Saturday so this will be a good chance to get things back on track."

Hoosiers prepare for road games

·

One year ago, the women's soccer team finished 7-5-1, but compiled a meager 1-5-1 record in conference play. This season Indiana (6-2-1, 3-1-1) has lost just one Big Ten match and is ranked No. 23 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll. The team attributes its success to a newfound confidence level -- one that helps the Hoosiers enter every contest expecting to win.

Program trains teachers

·

About 100 students, ranging from freshmen to seniors, took time out of their schedules -- and came in out of the rain -- to learn more about the Teach for America program Wednesday night in Jordan Hall. The two-year program provides recent graduates the opportunity to teach in underprivileged areas of a variety of cities, from the Mississippi Delta to Los Angeles, Cal. It benefits children in low-income neighborhoods. Teach for America, an Americorps organization, began about 12 years ago.

Team undefeated in the Big Ten

·

The men's soccer team will face two conference opponents on the road this weekend. Today, IU (7-2-0, 3-0) travels to the University of Wisconsin to battle the Badgers (6-4-1, 0-1). Sunday, they face the Northwestern Wildcats (0-8-2, 0-4) in Evanston, Ill. When the No. 6 Hoosiers travel to Northwestern, they will find a Wildcat team hungry for a win. The Wildcats have yet to win a game this year and have never beaten the Hoosiers, who have outscored them 87-6 in their 17 meetings. Northwestern returns only six starters from last year's squad.

Not so unsung heroes

·

Play this trivia game. Name five starters on the offensive line. Give up? They are junior tackles Bobby Brandt, Enoch DeMar and A.C. Myler; sophomore guard Anthony Oakley; senior center Craig Osika. If that was impossible, learn them. Quick. Because these players were key to the Hoosiers offensive stomping of Wisconsin last Saturday. More specifically, they helped Big Ten Player of the Week senior running back Levron Williams to a record-setting day. But this group has not let the new attention interrupt their modesty.

Foundation reports record $230.2 million in private donations

·

Reporting $230.2 million collected, the IU Foundation set an all-time record for contributions from the private sector for the 2000-01 fiscal year. In its annual report, the Foundation reported nearly 100,000 individuals and organizations made contributions to IU, more than doubling last year's total givings of $109.1 million. Barbara Coffman, IU Foundation executive director of communications, attributed the dramatic increase in donations to the Lilly Endowment for biotechnology, which contributed $105 million.

Women look to defend titles

·

First the women's basketball team wants to enjoy itself tonight at Midnight Madness, then it's down to the task at hand, which is to improve from last season, when the Hoosiers finished 20-11 and earned a post-season berth to the National Invitational Tournament. "It's kind of like a party, then it's business right away," senior forward Erin McGinnis said. "Our expectations are very high. We want to come out and make the tournament, and be competitors for the Big Ten championship."

Men's squad starts anew

·

It has been more than six months since the Hoosiers suffered their first round loss to Kent State in the NCAA Tournament. But Mike Davis has just gotten over the loss. "I'm over it now. It took a long time," he said. "We should have won that game. That was probably one of the poorest teams we played all season. "The Kent State (loss) was an embarrassment."

Be wary of plastic power

·

I got my first one when I still had meal points. Only weeks after arrival on campus, I stupidly and irreversibly filled out one of those easy applications. The only question I stumbled on was mother's maiden name, as I generously listed my yearly income (figuring in parent's generosity above all else.) Mine is red with a photo of the Sample Gates. Issued by MBNA of America, one of the largest credit issuers, according to the Wall Street Journal. This piece of plastic sin has caused countless fights with parents and harassing phone calls from creditors at all hours of the early morning.

That whole 'bin Laden' thing

·

Earlier this week, I contemplated writing my column about the whole Osama bin Laden thing. I figured I had put it off long enough, and I was starting to feel goofy because practically every other IDS columnist had already written about how war is good, or war is bad, or Afghanistan stinks, or the United States is cool. But I decided not to babble about my opinion, mainly because I know I really don\'t have anything to add to the debate. Everything has already been said, and other columnists have already looked like either heartless, hawkish, ethnocentric goons who want to bomb the bejeezus out of Afghanistan or wimpy, idealistic, pacifist whiners who\'ve smoked way too much pot.

Afghan opposition awaits orders

·

MAHMUD-E-RAQI, Afghanistan -- Afghan opposition commanders are waiting for the order to move on the capital, but exiled Afghan leaders and a Pakistani official say the northern alliance has agreed not to seize Kabul until major factions can establish a government to replace the ruling Taliban. The agreement was reached during a meeting between the exiled Afghan King Mohammad Zaher Shah and northern alliance leaders in Rome, said an aide to the monarch.

Willie Nelson comes to auditorium

·

Willie Nelson is not what you would call a traditional country music star -- he's an outlaw. Since his beginnings as a struggling songwriter in Nashville, Tenn., he has been fighting against the constraints of the country music genre. At 68, Nelson shows no signs of slowing down after a 40-year career and 100 albums. He will perform at the IU Auditorium at 8 p.m. Saturday for the Homecoming concert. Tickets cost from $26 to $46 ($16 to $26 for IU-Bloomington students) and are still available.

Canadian anthrax threat low

OTTAWA -- Health Minister Allan Rock said Tuesday that Canadians shouldn't fear the "remote" possibility of an outbreak of anthrax disease. A man died in Florida last Friday after inhaling the bacterium, a rare way of contracting the disease. Concerns were heightened after anthrax was found in the nostrils of a second man who is a co-worker.

Student takes break to spend time with family

·

Sophomore Jessie Moskal is taking the semester off from IU. She is at home in Brecksville, Ohio, spending time with her family, and has kept in touch with friends using her dad's e-mail address. But Moskal hasn't heard from her father, William, since the attacks on the World Trade Center Sept. 11. He was attending a meeting at the headquarters of his employer, Marsh USA Inc., on the 100th floor of the north tower.
