Israel should leave Palestine

Palestinians have been forced to live under Israeli military rule for thirty-four years, and are now, more than ever, determined to be free of it. The occupied territories, which include the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem, are not recognized as a part of Israel by the international community and are maintained through force.

Agreements are key to peace

The last sixteen months of conflict between Palestinians and Israelis hurt me deeply. Useless fighting and bloodshed between these two peoples has to end. Palestinians and Israelis are destined to live with each other; neither side is simply going to disappear. The only solution to the bloodshed is peace.

STD education necessary for all

Peace camp no longer welcome

They're still there in Dunn Meadow. The tents are still up, the pamphlets about women in Afghanistan and radioactive weapons are still on a table held down by rocks, the sleeping bags and camping chairs can still be seen inside the tents along with the campers who call those tents home, for now. The Dunn Meadow peace campers are similar to ghosts haunting a house; it seems as if they're just not going to leave. But how long will they actually stay out there?

What is the true age of an adult?

In the last month, IU's "alcohol problem" has been given increased attention. Much ink has been spilled in this publication on that topic. Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Delta Tau Delta had parties raided and are facing real consequences for making alcohol available to adults.

'AntigonE' relays modern message

As the world fights religious fanatics with misconstrued perceptions of sacred texts, a small ensemble in a tiny theater portrays a post-apocalyptic religious group led by its own misconceptions of sacred truths. Religious leaders potentially have the power to mold the minds of millions with their own interpretations of religious texts. They can deem what is right and what is wrong and more importantly, what is truth and what is not.

Senate strips tax plan, sends blank slate to committee

INDIANAPOLIS -- Republicans who rule the Indiana Senate took their first action Monday on a tax-and-budget plan approved by the Democrat-controlled House by gutting the bill and sending a \"blank slate" to the Senate Finance Committee. The Senate Rules Committee removed tax-increase and tax-restructuring provisions, leaving only language dealing with a study committee and a title change of another committee intact.

Pentagon defends drone missile strike in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON -- U.S. soldiers who scoured the site of a CIA-directed missile attack in Afghanistan found evidence disputing claims that those killed were innocents, a senior Pentagon official said Monday. Rear Adm. John Stufflebeem said a team of more than 50 U.S. military personnel recovered ammunition, an empty box for a hand-held radio, English-language documents -- including credit card applications and commercial airline schedules -- and pieces of human remains.

Football player arrested for sexual assault

Junior cornerback Clarence Young was arrested Friday at his home after a warrant was filed Thursday by the Bloomington Police Department. Young is being accused of attempted rape, sexual assault and criminal confinement, all felonies, after a 19-year-old woman accused Young of assaulting her at a party Oct. 6, 2001, police said.

IU settles Izard suit for $76,775

Former head women's basketball coach Jim Izard accepted a settlement offer from IU over a lawsuit that Izard filed shortly after his dismissal in March of 2000. Izard, 53, stated in the lawsuit that then-athletic director, Clarence Doninger, illegally terminated him because he wanted a younger, female head coach.

Pension problem receives attention

A task force has been formed to fix an 11-year-old problem of creating a replacement retirement plan for 114 faculty members. These faculty members were hired in the summer of 1988 under the assumption that they would be eligible for the 18-20 pension plan. An IRS ruling in 1991 prevents them from receiving 18-20, however, and those 114 have been in limbo ever since, with no replacement plan created by the University.

Team comes from behind to pull out a victory

The IU men's track team won the Collegiate Cup this weekend at Penn State's banked track. The meet was highly contested with the Hoosiers scoring 105 points to beat the second place Nittany Lions by six. Both teams came into the competition ranked in the top 10 nationally, and the two lived up to their billing. The 3rd place Michigan Wolverines only scored a total of 59 points.

Top recruits prepare to compete

The Indiana University women\'s track team was able to bring several top recruits to IU with the success of last season. These recruits will get their first opportunity to compete for the team against the Michigan Wolverines. The meet will be held noon Saturday in the Gladstein Fieldhouse.

Team drops match, coach remains pleased

The IU men's tennis team (5-2) lost a hard fought match 4-3 to Vanderbilt Sunday at the Indiana Tennis Center. First, the Hoosiers lost the doubles point, dropping all three matches to Vanderbilt (3-0). Then, they lost three out of six singles matches to spell defeat. The match went down to the wire, and IU gave maximum effort all day. That effort pleased coach Ken Hydinger.

Senior Day: A defeat for Purdue

Senior Day at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center Saturday meant the final dual meet of Heath Montgomery's career. Facing Purdue meant bragging rights were on the line. The Hoosiers made sure that Montgomery went out in style -- bragging rights and all -- as they defeated the No. 21 Boilermakers 136.5-106.5.

U.S. wins gold in women's halfpipe
