Faculty council postpones voting on calendar changes

A trio of calendar changes will not be voted on this year by the Bloomington Faculty Council. At Tuesday's BFC meeting, the committee tabled the proposal, or postponed action on it until next fall.

Husband of slain student not buying insanity plea

LAFAYETTE -- The husband of a Purdue University graduate student who was murdered says he doubts the former doctoral student who pleaded guilty to the crime is mentally ill. Zhan Yin, 27, of China pleaded guilty but mentally ill to two counts of murder and other charges for the deaths last year of Yeunkyung Woo, 31, and her sister Hyo Kyung Woo, 29, both of South Korea.

As a young girl, Margaret Cho always wanted to perform. In her book, "I'm the One that I Want," she writes that she would smile and show off for people on buses because she had learned that if you made someone happy, candy was sure to follow. Department of Peace a waste

In my last column, I commented on the precarious nature of a growing government. One of the most asinine legislative proposals this year was House Resolution 2459, which calls for the creation of a new cabinet office -- the Department of Peace. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, introduced the bill July 11, 2001 -- exactly two months before the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11.

Book unites Bloomington readers

Uniting a community can be a tricky task, but Bloomington may be one more step closer to that goal. This week marks the conclusion of the "One Book, One Bloomington" project, sponsored by the Bloomington Area Arts Council. Everyone in Bloomington was asked to read "A Lesson Before Dying" by Ernest J. Gaines in an attempt to promote discussion of racial and social issues in the community.

IU's private donations jump

IU has claimed another national title as its been named the No. 1 public university in the nation regarding the amount of money it receives from the private sector. The annual ranking compiled by the Council for Aid to Education, compares 2001 fiscal year results for 960 colleges and universities in the U.S. IU skyrocketed in ranking this year, jumping from seventh last year to first this year among all public universities and from 19th to seventh among all universities.

University to tighten up on drinking

It has been dubbed "The World's Greatest College Weekend." However, students caught drinking during Little 500 weekend could face different penalties than they would during a normal week. Differences in how alcohol violations will be combated will be occurring both on and off campus. Students who are arrested by the Bloomington Police Department this weekend will have their names referred to the University. This procedure is not in effect during the rest of the school year.

Sharon: Troops will withdraw soon

JERUSALEM -- Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said Monday that troops will be out of all West Bank cities except Ramallah and Bethlehem within a week. "Altogether, we are on our way out," Sharon said in an interview with CNN. Israel, he said, has no intention to stay in "cities of terror."

Team hopes to rebound at home

The IU softball team returns home to host IU-Purdue University Indianapolis today at 2:30 p.m. at the IU Softball Field. Both the Hoosiers and Jaguars enter today's match-up with four-game losing streaks. IU (11-25-1) comes into the game after getting swept in a pair of Big Ten conference doubleheaders over the weekend at Illinois and Purdue. IUPUI (6-26) dropped all four of its contests against Oakland this past weekend.

MTV honors Aerosmith

LOS ANGELES -- Sure, there are Grammys and a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. There are MTV's Video Music Awards and platinum albums, too. But Aerosmith's Steven Tyler said the ultimate accolade comes when well-known artists cover the songs that made his band a household name.

Jordan River Forum

Ben Piper's recent column about drilling for oil in the Arctic Refuge showed careful thought and consideration. Piper obviously cares a great deal about our country and that is very nice to see. But I do believe he has been misled by the Bush administration. Piper states that the U.S. Geological Survey confirmed that oil exploration in ANWR would have little, if any, negative environmental impact on the wildlife native to the Refuge.

For friendlier skies

It's the Stadium Express of sky -- direct flight, one rate and there is no first class. It's JetBlue, and unless you are from the East Coast I am sure you have never heard of it. Based out of JFK Airport in New York City, the two-year-old airline company boasts satellite television with 24 channels at every seat, leather seats in every class and the lowest fares in the business.

A fear one should never know

I do not walk around campus wearing a yarmulke -- at least not anymore -- but I do go to Hillel on Fridays and sometimes during the week. I am a Jewish studies student. I am a Jew. And I now have a fear that I never dreamed I'd know.
