Local support group to hold first meeting

The Bloomington chapter of Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays is set to open up a new year of meetings 7 p.m. tonight at the Trinity Episcopal Church, 111 S. Grant St. PFLAG is a national organization that provides support, education and advocacy toward gay, lesbian and transgender people. The local chapter of the organization is entering its 11th year.

Trustees cancel Friday meeting for memorial

The IU board of trustees decided to cancel its monthly meeting Friday in order to honor the late Gov. Frank O'Bannon, who died Saturday from a stroke. The trustees will use the day to attend an interfaith service for the governor at the Indiana Statehouse in Indianapolis. The services will begin at noon on the west steps of the Statehouse where the late governor was inaugurated in 1997.

Bashore ready to break scoring record

Last year the IU field hockey team scored 22 goals in a total of 19 games. The leading scorer for the Hoosiers last year was senior Erica Nilsson who scored five goals. In just four games this year the Hoosiers totaled 14 goals, averaging three and a half per game.

The best 'almost' champions

As the Major League Baseball season comes to a close and I take a look at the standings, I cannot help but notice Alex Rodriguez and his $25.2 million contract per year and how the Texas Rangers are once again in the cellar of the American League West. Despite being one of, if not the best all-around player in baseball, A-Rod has failed to lead his Rangers even close to postseason play in his three seasons with the club.

After first win, IU awaits Wildcats

When freshman running back Ben Jarvus Green-Ellis scooted around left end for his second touchdown against Indiana State and his first 100-yard rushing day, sophomore left tackle Isaac Sowells and the rest of the offensive line could take pride in Green-Ellis' success. It had been five games since the Hoosiers had a running back eclipse the century mark.

Recruitment class grabs Indianapolis standout

The IU men's basketball team has solidified next year's recruiting class as one of the top in the country with the addition of Indianapolis North Central's A.J. Ratliff. The 6-foot-1 point guard verbally committed to Coach Mike Davis and the Hoosiers Sunday. "I went with what I decided to do," Ratliff said. "I talked to Coach Davis about my position with the team. I hope to be the leader of the group as the point guard. I've watched their games on TV and seen the crazy fans and hung out with some of the players."

Freshmen ready to lead the way

A few days before the soccer signing period, coach Mick Lyon said he was excited about this year's freshman class. The team had improved its record from 2001 and had a lot of players coming into the system. At the time, Lyon said it would be a great year for IU women's soccer. While the Hoosiers didn't find the instant success early this season, the past two games have helped give the team something to be excited about.

Hurricane Isabel's threat may not directly reach Indiana, but residents are still feeling the effects from hundreds of miles away. The Category 2 hurricane is likely a few days from the coast, but preparation for possible flooding and dangerous winds has already begun. Indiana Task Force One, a national disaster response team, deployed 28 members of its team Tuesday to Edison, N.J. The team, made up of members from various departments throughout Marion County, is trained to respond in national and man-made disasters.

Birthday ushers in quiet memories

Jill Behrman's mother, Marilyn, is certain that if her daughter were here to celebrate her 23rd birthday today, she'd be doing so as a fifth-year senior. Citizens debate value of southern Indiana casino

French Lick, Ind., is not Las Vegas or Atlantic City, but the small Indiana community could have more in common with the famous gambling cities in the coming year. Citizens for the Future of Orange County have proposed the construction of a gambling boat that will float in the waterway between hotels in French Lick and West Baden Springs. After 10 years of lobbying for a casino, Orange County residents will vote for the referendum in early November.

Thousands urged to evacuate as Hurricane Isabel nears East Coast

MANTEO, N.C. -- Traffic surged off the Outer Banks island chain Tuesday as nearly 100,000 people were urged to evacuate the North Carolina coast before the arrival of Hurricane Isabel, which had weakened but remained a dangerous storm on a track toward land. The National Hurricane Center posted a hurricane watch from Little River Inlet, S.C., to Chincoteague, Va., including Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds and a large part of Chesapeake Bay.

He was known to my generation as Captain Hanzel "Hank" Murphy. To others, frankly, he wasn't known at all. Though he starred in 1,004 performances as the longest-running Tevye in "Fiddler on the Roof" in the mid-1960s (whose costume hangs in the Smithsonian), though he enjoyed a brief stint on Broadway as Molokov in "Chess", though he had a role in the 1980s classic film "Mommie Dearest" and guest appearances on "Third Watch," "Law and Order" and "Kojak," nobody today seemed to be able to place Hollywood working-class legend Harry Goz's voice with his face.

Reality bites

Maybe you missed the news like I did, but two weeks ago, ABC announced plans to air an awards show geared specifically for reality TV. What I'd like to do this week is speculate a little.
