Let me explain

·

Last month, Interim Public Access Counselor for the State of Indiana, Sandra Bowman, issued an opinion stating that e-mails sent by IU employees via university accounts can be disclosed to the public through the 1984 Indiana Access to Public Records Act (IDS, Nov. 20).

A man, a plan, a kidney

·

Our parents will never escape being called baby boomers. Neither will Generation Xers. But so far our generation has not received one fixed label. Try this on for size: "The Simpsons Generation," coined by Chris Turner in the on-line magazine Shift last year, honoring the popular television show for the way its cynical humor captures the sensibilities of our time.

Pulling water from the well

Hark, the Herald Angels Sing, Glory to Sir Kenny G! In the wake of hushed rumors and questions surrounding the future structure of Indiana University's upper management team, IU President Adam Herbert has opted for an old standard, time tested and manufacturer guaranteed: Kenneth Gros Louis has been selected to maintain the post of Chancellor Sharon Brehm.

'Falstaff' executed hilariously

·

Excepting the premiere of a new work, it is the accepted task of the critic to express his or her view on the performance of a work and not the work itself. But in the case of "Falstaff," Giuseppe Verdi's last opera, this limitation is difficult to abide by, for throughout the opera, it was the sheer buoyancy and brilliance of the music that left a lasting impression.

The silent, deadly remedy?

·

The United States is supposed to be the good guy, ready to fight dictators who threaten freedom. But can we bring truth, justice and the American way to Myanmar? The country, also known as Burma, is a brutal military dictatorship. Its ruling junta, the State Peace and Development Council, has embraced extraordinarily cruel policies to keep the former British colony's ethnic minorities under its control.

Parents resolve fraternity lawsuit

·

The parents of an IU sophomore who died almost three years ago from injuries he suffered at a Theta Chi rush party have settled a lawsuit they filed against the fraternity. A jury trial had been scheduled for Nov. 17 in the U.S. District Court of Southern Indiana, but at the last minute, attorneys scheduled a settlement conference for Wednesday.

IU returns home to face Illini, Wildcats

·

After splitting a two-game road trip to Iowa and Minnesota, the Hoosiers come back home to face Illinois and Northwestern this weekend. IU currently sports an 11-16 overall record, going 4-12 in the Big Ten.

Hoosiers play host for IU Invitational

·

This weekend the No. 13 IU women's swimming and diving team will be holding the IU Invitational at Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center. This will be the first three-day event for the team and the field will include No. 23 Missouri and Big Ten foes Michigan State and Illinois among other schools.

Hoosiers hope to end bad streak

·

With the men's swimming and diving season in full swing, the No. 24 Hoosiers (1-4) are still looking for that killer instinct that was apparently absent during their string of defeats on the road. They dropped four close meets in a row, losing to Kentucky, Tennessee, Wisconsin and Northwestern.

Team happy to start season

·

IU opens its wrestling season Sunday by competing in the Missouri Open, a national tournament that features some of the best wrestling schools in the nation. The team, which is coming off a 16-9 record last season, returns a healthy dose of tested sophomores and welcomes a large freshman class, creating a young group of wrestlers.

'I know now, because I was there'

·

ALLAS -- I never knew JFK. I never voted for JFK. I was never one of his constituents. I wasn't even born until 20 years after his death. But the second I stepped foot on the corner of Elm and Houston in downtown Dallas, I knew I was a part of history. The movies and the pictures can show you the story, but actually being there tells the story. As my friends and I made our way through the halls of what is now the Dallas County Administration Building, once known as the Texas School Book Depository, I could start to feel a calm settling over them.

IU faces injury issues as it prepares for opener

·

On a team with no seniors and just two juniors, injury problems are the last thing a coach wants to see. But that is exactly what IU coach Kathi Bennett is facing heading into her squad's regular season opener against Cornell tomorrow night at 6 p.m. in Assembly Hall.

Basketball season officially begins

·

The 104th season of IU basketball officially kicks off tonight at Assembly Hall with a contest against UNC-Greensboro. Even after two wins in their exhibition campaign, IU coach Mike Davis said they still have a lot to think about. "We just have to figure out who's going to score," Davis said. "I can't sit here and tell you what guys are going to be in double figures, because I don't know."

Destroy the Purdue drum

·

The advantage of Purdue choking against Ohio State last week is that I can say things like: This week, Kyle "I look like a dirty hippie" Orton and Ben "Wide Left" Jones will try to rebound from gagging away a shot at the Big Ten title.

on the SIDELINES

·

Green's fiancee pleads innocent WESTLAKE, Ohio -- William Green's fiancee pleaded innocent Thursday to charges she stabbed the Cleveland Browns running back at their home. Green was wounded under his left shoulder blade during a fight Wednesday, police said.

Why a bucket?

·

It's hard to believe that one of the most famous trophies in college football came from a farm in southern Indiana. But that farm, between Kent and Hanover, Ind., is where the Old Oaken Bucket called home before becoming the winner's prize in the IU-Purdue football game. The bucket's inaugural appearance came in the 1925 game, which ended in a 0-0 tie. Purdue's Fritz Ernst and IU's Wiley J. Huddle were given the job of finding the trophy. The pair found what they were looking for at the old Bruner Farm.

Blood drive competition sets new record

·

It was a long and bloody battle, but in the end Purdue University pulled ahead to win the seventh annual Blood Donor Challenge. This year marked a new record for the blood drive, with Purdue and IU rallying a total 5,021 donations, beating last year's total of 4,678. "When it comes to saving a life, the bottom-line is competition stirs people up for a good cause," said Kellie Cox, director of Alumni Clubs for Purdue.

The Indiana Daily Student

'Beyond belief'

·

By the time the news spread, everything stopped. Professors canceled classes. IU and Purdue University postponed the weekend's Old Oaken Bucket match. For the rest of the day, radios and televisions buzzed all over the quiet campus as students with pale faces and trembling nerves gathered and waited to hear any developments in the tragedy.

Jackson booked on latest charges

·

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Trailed by a phalanx of TV cameras, a handcuffed Michael Jackson was booked on suspicion of child molestation Thursday after arriving by private jet to face charges that could finish off his already declining career and send him to prison for years. The self-styled "King of Pop" immediately posted $3 million bail and waved to reporters and flashed a V-sign before leaving the Santa Barbara County jail in a black Suburban escorted by three sheriff's motorcycle officers.
