Eli Lilly to change drug-testing process after suicide INDIANAPOLIS -- Eli Lilly and Co. said it will lengthen the withdrawal period to wean study participants off an experimental drug, mainly to ease concerns from test subjects after the suicide of a 19-year-old who participated in the study.

Marines shoot, kill gunman

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- U.S. Marines shot and killed a gunman during an outbreak of gunfire at a weekend demonstration by Haitians celebrating the ousting of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, a spokesman said Monday. The gunfire occurred during an anti-Aristide march Sunday, prompting the Marines to return fire in the first armed action of their week-old mission to stabilize Haiti.

Freshman leaps to IU with long reputation

Twice in one week

My attempts to repress the memories of junior high school have been consistently hindered by male college students who refuse to transcend adolescence. In the course of a week, I have been sexually harassed and physically and psychologically intimidated on campus twice by groups of three to five males. On the first occasion, Feb. 20, three boys made rude remarks (such as "I can see up your skirt") as I entered the Indiana Memorial Union. They then followed me to the pay phone booths, shaking them violently and making menacing comments (such as "Show me your cunt") as I attempted to make a call.

Last month, RPS put up signs comparing prices of living on and off campus. These signs blatantly misled students, claiming that an off-campus apartment costs more than on-campus living. In reality, students can find comfortable accommodations off campus for far less per month than any dorm.

Free for a week

I can't concentrate. I don't want to study and it takes every single bit of strength I have to sit through my classes without screaming uncontrollably. But in less than a week, I'll be far from this little campus with its crowded sidewalks and suffocating classrooms. Two little words have kept me going through the long winter months of trekking to class through foot-high snow drifts and busting my butt on frozen sidewalks. You're excited, too. It's spring break.

Young Hoosiers learn the violin

FRENCH LICK, Ind. -- The sound of violins can now be heard at a southern Indiana elementary school as three third-graders have started learning to play the instrument as part of a new school program. The school district sought grants from two companies and bought three violins at $400 each to start the program at Springs Valley Elementary School, district superintendent Roger Fisher said.

Foci blends video, dance, music elements in one

'The Odditys' brings a new twist

Eight people have banded together to offer the humor-deprived a long-form sketch comedy group called The Odditys. Based at the Bloomington Playwright's Project, Odditys presented its first show at 11:30 p.m Friday night. After considering many of the other groups in town as either "just not funny" or including too many "ego-stroking" jokes, the group sought to create its own odd genre of humor.

What a joke. That's about the best description I can come up with for what exactly IU Student Association has become. For the 25th year in a row -- or whatever the number is at -- the election is being contested. The political jargon is flying in the paper while students jeer at the mockery of a student government representing them.

Washing out wallets

Our student leaders are again making our lives easier by providing us with "free" services. Similar to the IU Student Association proposing unlimited service for campus buses, thanks to the Residence Hall Association, dormitory residents may also have unlimited access to campus laundry machines simply by sliding their ID card through the machines. Students will even bealerted by e-mail when their laundry is complete. Sounds great, doesn't it? As always, there's a catch. Just like the campus bus service -- which would impose a mandatory student fee even if you don't use the buses -- the cost of unlimited laundry service will be charged to students. Students will be forced to pay from $75 to $100 for a service they may or may not use.

Panel discusses strategies for fighting backlash against homosexuals

Members of IU's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender community proposed strategies to combat the mounting backlash against gay marriage during an OUT-sponsored panel discussion last night at the Indiana Memorial Union. Gay marriage has risen to the forefront of the national debate in recent months, with debate in Massachusetts, San Francisco and all across the country.

Hoosiers end year below .500

As the losses continue to mount for the Hoosiers, so does the frustration. IU finished with its first losing regular season since 1969-70, as No. 17 Wisconsin won 70-52 Saturday in Assembly Hall. Now, without a championship in next week's Big Ten Tournament, the Hoosiers (13-14, 7-9 Big Ten) won't make the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 18 years. Without at least two wins in the Big Ten Tournament, the Hoosiers won't even make the National Invitational Tournament.
